After two weeks away, I was needing my Gorge Fix. Did my research and decided that there was no reason to bring my windsurfing gear (WRONG!) So I brought my bikes to the Discover Bikes shop to bring them up to speed. I also wanted to shop for gifts at the local stores. I'm located 2 hrs NW of Hood River and had no idea what the trip would be like on Hwy 14.
It was a busy road, but the scenery was just as gorgeous, despite the smoke, from the north side of the Columbia. Surprisingly, my trip still took the same two hours. It was a bit of a downer to say the least when I saw the windsurfers at the Hatch having a blast. Oh, well.... The smoke was light throughout most of the trip, and in HR it did not burn my eyes or send swirls of ash into my jeep as it had days before in my hometown! Coming home I thought that I might see actual flames when one mountain leg glowed red down to the hwy. But when I came around the bend there was only relief and joy at the site of the big red sun. There's no staying away now if the wind blows for me! |

The air at the Event Site was remarkably clear after the west winds returned this afternoon. You could see smoke in 3 out of 4 directions but plenty of blue sky overhead. The wind had a rare (for the Event Site) WNW cant that seemed to be keeping the smoke away and bringing cleaner air from the North. |
