[quote="isobars", and I find it infinitely more fun than freestyle, including tacking. [/quote]

And I find jibing infinitely more fun than having sex with super models.

Why?

BECAUSE I CAN`T HAVE SEX WITH SUPER MODELS Exclamation

WSMag editor Tom James tested a Gorge Animal Bonzer in east coast chop and waves years ago. He concluded that it will jibe so tightly at speed that it will easily carve jibes within the space between east coast waves.

That may well be true, IN THE SURF. East coast waves do have shorter periods, but I am talking about the sound side, with the shallow water, and where the vast majority of the windsurfers sail. In the sound, the wave peaks can be 7-10' apart.

MAN, but it frustrates some people when others don't want to do everything their way, doesn't it? I guess they need external validation from others, while the rest of us validate (and sometimes invalidate) our own choices every day.

I think I can probably get one around in 7-10ft if I bank it right. ;*)

You can have sex with a supermodel if you want (well, unless your
equipment is faulty) but a ripp'n jibe is
still more fun. ;*) Of course for some people, a good jibe is a lot
harder to accomplish than supermodel sex. ;*) ;*)

p.s. I have a board, that is pretty much an auto-jiber. I have loaned it
out and those who've ridden it say it makes jibing much easier. It's
a design from about 1990. While I tend to agree with Lee D. that if you
can jibe, you can jibe anything, there are some boards that make the task easier. And just like that we're back on topic ;*)

Good info! I know what a super model looks like. But feel free to share some details on the auto jiber. Thanks

You won't find another board like my auto-jibe, but I can describe it for you.
It is a full custom CrossM (CrossM was a very localized late 80s boutique snowboard
company if the rumors are true). About 75 ltrs, 8'2" polyester (glass), wide point forward,
mast track more forward than current designs (around the wide point) but
not as much as most boards of that era, fairly sharp rails
from the mast track back, tucked and rounded rails from the mast
track forward, moderate double concave bottom, the tail is pretty wide
for a late 80s early 90s board, but not as wide as current tails and very
narrow in thickness with a nice pin at the end, no tail rocker, but a little
nose scoop.

None of that seems particularly radical, but somehow they just hit some
magic planform. The board is a hoot to ride (even with modern sails), and turns more like a
slalom board, than a wave board, but for it's size, it doesn't handle big
wind well (4.2 is about the lower limit of the board). I still bring it out
in Utah when the wind is relatively strong.

Gotta completely disagree with this. Learning to jibe in high winds is easier flipping the sail first but inevitably leads to horrible habits and is a habit harder to break than cigarettes. I don`t know anyone who has learned this way and been able to switch over to a step jibe. I`m sure there are but I haven`t come across any. I pity all the Gorge jibers who still can`t plane out of a jibe after sailing for 20 years or can`t sail clew first (gotta step jibe to do this) or jibe when the wind dies. Even if you can plane out of them it`s just not as efficient as step jibing. Learn to step jibe first! Easy to learn the other way later.

That's exactly how I learned, if for no other reason than the step jibe wasn't well known in the early to mid '80s. The step jibe was developed as a way to keep speed upon exit and avoid bouncing. As more and more folks raced planing hulls with boxy rails the method became popular and migrated to other board types.

The reverse foot jibe forces the sailor's hips forwards and is a great way to learn how to keep speed through the exit without the complication of flipping the sail simultaneously. The clew-first jibe (something Bruce Peterson and Robby Naish made famous) can be then used to keep the nose down and the board under control. It provides an easy transition into the step jibe.

If more people came out of a planing jibe clew first, they'd actually be making a planing jibe.

... if they don't lose Da Plane when jibing the sail. A planing jibe isn't over until we exit with the board, the rig, and our feet all on the new reach and still planing.
