Out today in this:

Smallest sail I have is a 4.7m Chinook PowerGlide.

Had it out once in way more Wind with it flattened out and I thought it sailed like crap. Had it out today in the above wind and I just don’t like it. Sail always feels loose and flappy and blown out. My 6.5m and 7.5m always impress me with how they rig and sail.

What are some known and proven sails in around the same size(~4.7) that excell in the above winds and in winds greater then that?

How much do you weigh?

The power glide isn't a high wind sail. It's a lightweight training sail.

in winds depicted above, i would sail my aerotech airx 5.8 or phantom 5.0

i am a power junkie, and like to have juice to spare in my most typical conditions in surf: onshore(ish) and a bit puffy. others would choose smaller, but they don't mind slogging much.

op has experienced what can happen to online only, price point driven consumers: they buy the wrong stuff.

i am 205 lbs and have been sailing for more than 3 decades.

In winds 20-30 range, I would likely be on a 5.2. If the wind was 20-24, I would be on a 6.0. For 24-28, a 5.2, 28-32 a 4.7 and over 30 a 4.0. I would be on a 96L board (a little big for 30+ winds, but that doesn't happen that often so I manage with the 96. I would use my 105L board with the 6.0.

I weigh 170 lbs

Most small sails rig pretty flat (but always a small foil shape), plus it's also important to have the right mast. Proper flex, length and IMCS, compatible with your sail brand/model/size.

What were you struggling with the most?
How much experience do you have with strong winds?
What were some of the other sailors reports on the day?

rtz if you are like me, you won't use a 4.5 very often, maybe 5 times a year max, so you should be able to find a good used sail to meet your needs. For me, when winds go over 30 mph, I need control and durability. In winds that high, speed is easy to achieve, but control is what you really need. I've owned a few sails in that size range that have been stellar. One was a Windwing Bash and the other is a Goya Guru. Both are made super tough with all x-scrim construction. Both have a "light in your hands feel". Both afford exceptional control when things get crazy. You might check Windance in the Gorge in their used sail dept. They have a 4.5 Guru and a 4.6 Windwing.

PS: I've heard some really good things about the Naish Force sails. There is a 4.5 and a 4.2 for sale in the Buy/Sell section of Iwindsurf.

I have no relationship with Windance, I just look there first for used sails.

Hard to fault Ezzy as a high wind control sail, or sail period.

PM me if interested in a Taka 1, 4.5 , VGC , ship from Colorado.

I'm 195# and I've been sailing just over a year.
Just last weekend sailed a 6.4 and 5.7 on a 130L then 106L in near identical conditions (shallow and choppy 18-2Cool.
Both used power wave/freeride sails on a decent SDM mast, nothing special.
