I only sail in the ocean where hopefully there is also a swell running, so my opinion can only be limited to that.
For going out, I'm all about speed, so I used a narrower stance, the front strap position is set a bit farther back.
When I'm sailing in, looking for and hopefully getting a wave, I use a wider stance, better for control while riding a wave, so that corresponding front foot strap is set farther forward.
So when you look at my boards, the front foot straps are not set at the same position. Here's a pic of one of my boards, left front strap using the front holes, right front foot strap using the rear holes.

I finally got the chance to take the new Futura 114 out with a Retro 7.5. It was also the first session of the year.

The straps are set Outboard and in the middle position. It worked awesome! At no point did I feel too far outboard. Compared to my old carve 121 my feet felt more or less at home.

Those who recommended I go straight to outboard, thanks. I thought there would be more of an adjustment period from the old to new board. Any awkwardness I felt yesterday was simply due to not windsurfing since September rather than a board adjustment.

The Futura is awesome. Nice and stable at speed. Some fin spin-out but that's likely a stance issue. Looks like my Carve 121 will be finding a new home.

I had initially installed the supplied ultralight straps but decided to remove them for now until I dial in the board. Using good old Dakine Primo's for the moment.
