This 2 cam sail doesn't have zippers in the luff sleeve, at the cam location. Personally, I like zips in cammed sail cause it makes rigging way easier / faster.
But the Flyer doesn't need them, cause the luff curve is straighter than most all contemporary sails. So by leaving the zips out of the design, you save a little weight and cost. |
Greg, the Flyer sails DO have zipper ports at both cambers for access to the cam shims for setting the mast sleeve tension. The rigging technique is different from most modern cam sails in that the cambers are kept on, and pulled down the mast when rigging.

Oh crap... geez... sorry... "Thanks for the correction"!!
Yes now I remember, you need the zips there in case you need to change cam shims (my bad
But the problem I initially had, was... keeping the zips open did NOT give me more luff sleeve room, to rig the Flyer like other cammed sails, where you pop the cams on after the mast is inserted snd there's some downhaul tension. And this is cause the Flyer has such a tight leff sleeve.
So as I quickly learned - for the Flyer you insert the mast onto the cams, as you slide it into the mast sleeve. And with the straighter luff sleeve design, this works GREAT.
Therefore with the Flyer you always leave the cam zips closed... and you forget about them, haha!! _________________ Greg

I don't see the rigging guide on the website for the Flyer.
I am sure it comes with instructions, but for those following this thread and are interested in how to rig it would it be possible to post a link to the rigging guide? |

Thanks Bryn!
This link might work better?
Great job Bruce... very complete and informative directions.
Bryn - I helped a friend rig his. And the only part of the instructions that didn't work for me, was, "if the cam comes off the mast you can either start again, or, you can finish assembling and pull 1/2 downhaul, and full outhaul, then unzip the cam zipper, push down on the batten end, and pull the cam up from below onto the mast." Of course, this is the normal way to rig most cammed sails. But on the 7m Flyer I was helping with, the mast sleeve was too tight. Maybe cause it was brand new, Anyway, I did NOT want to force anything and have something break. So we just started over, with the cam zips closed, and were careful to keep the cams on. This was VERY easy, and rigging was smooth and quick. _________________ Greg

I'm very interested to see how the Flyer does for you in your conditions- most notably, if it depowers/goes neutral enough to allow for easy surfing while on the wave.
I really want a Flyer for blasting around my local lake next summer!! Bruce, expect a call soon _________________ formerly known as hodad.andy

Watching this thread.
I would like to know how the 6.0m flyer would handle a 180lb sailor and a low aspect foil like the naish..or i think fanatics foil is also geared for power and not speed. (Which i think is the direction i would lean towards). Say the wind is a solid steady 10mph....can it be done? Or is the 7.0m needed? |

The locals of that weight in those winds are on the 7.0, it's very light weight. |

I have the Flyer and just tried to rig it on a Chinook 430 RDM mast IMCS 21.
It is too tight around the cams and won't rotate. There is no slack at all in that area of the sail.
This is my first cammed sail so I am not sure if I did something wrong but it seems very straight forward. The cams stayed on the mast, the pockets are zipped up.
I will work with my local dealer to see what is going on and update this thread once we figure it out. |
