You can only slide out sideways if there is nothing on the other side.

This is not what I refer to as a mini van, it has been noted , but comparison not much the same .

Michael,
I didn't catch that in the pics, but that's brilliant because it requires less space between the racks since you don't have to slide footstraps through the racks.

Bingo. That was the breakthrough for me.

The down-side is that the racks have to be stronger since they're supported at only one end.

Yes. The smart way to do it would be to have a welder custom build something. I went with lumber...I'm a terrible carpenter but wood is cheap. I put these supports in in 2004 and they've never failed. If you decide to do this feel free to contact me for detailed photos, info etc.

Here's a slightly different angle (photo taken yesterday...the rack is now 14 years old). Note how the uppermost rack does not need to be cantilevered...it "hangs" from the roof. Also how with shuffling the boards I now keep all four with fins on.

When I built the rack my boards ranged from 8'5" to 9'4" Currently all the boards are under 8'0".

Needless to say, designing and building racks and an interior into a full sized cargo van is totally different than with a minivan with an existing car-like interior. With the latter, most folks have to build something that mounts only to the floor most likely using seat attachment points as part of the foundation of the rack. Of course, one can remove a minivan interior, but very few will want to destroy the vehicle's resale potential in the long run.

I posted pictures of setup of my Honda Odyssey before, but here we go again. I removed second and third row of seats completely, that saved a lot of weight.

Thanks for all the posts thus far. How do you secure items to prevent them from flying around inside if you get hit by another vehicle ?

Don't get hit with your boards if you run into something. Gorge vans always racked boards behind the driver.

Might want to consider using something a little more robust. I suspect a bungee cord will do very little to prevent your board from becoming a lethal projectile in the event of a "real" crash.

very dramatic! Wink
This is minivan, not maxy. Not much room in there. Noses of boards on the rack are touching back of driver seat. There is not much play. They are not going forward anywhere. Bungee cords needed mostly to keep boards from sliding on rack from side to side on turns.
This is how rack looks now without boards.
