United Nations rejects U.S. proposal to extend Iran arms embargo

Quote:
Aug. 15 (UPI) -- The United Nations Security Council has rejected the U.S. proposal to extend an arms embargo on Iran.

The Dominican Republic was the only country to support the proposal in the security council vote late Friday. Russia and China voted against the U.S. resolution and the rest of the council members abstained.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo criticized member states for their lack of support.

"The Security Council's failure to act decisively in defense of international peace and security is inexcusable," Pompeo said in a statement.

Pompeo told the U.N. Security Council in June that the U.S. resolution to extend the arms embargo on Iran, which is due to expire in mid-October as part of the 2015 nuclear deal, had support from other nations.

Pompeo added that the Middle Eastern country could otherwise become a "rogue weapons dealer."

The United States, France, Britain, China, Russia and Germany originally negotiated the nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, with Iran, in 2015, under the Obama administration. But President Donald Trump withdrew from the nuclear deal four days before a deadline to re-certify the 2015 pact, calling it "defective at its core."

The nuclear deal lifted economic sanctions on Iran in exchange for the country limiting its nuclear program, and withdrawing from the deal allowed the United States to reimpose those sanctions.

Since then, Iran has retaliated by restarting nuclear activities banned under the agreement.

Germans fear Trump more than coronavirus, survey shows

Quote:
BERLIN (Reuters) - Germans are more afraid of the policies of U.S. President Donald Trump than of the coronavirus which has wreaked havoc on Europe’s biggest economy, an annual survey of German attitudes showed on Thursday.

Fears that Trump’s policies would make the world a more dangerous place eclipsed economic worries, with 53% of those asked putting him top of their list, according to the survey conducted in June and July for the R+V Insurance Group.

Rising living costs, the economic situation and the cost to taxpayers of European Union debt came second, third and fourth for traditionally cautious Germans.

Debate leaves much of the world 'despondent about America'

Last night's debate seems to have done fresh damage to our global standing, leaving many to ask "fundamental" questions about the state of our democracy.

Quote:
Late last week, the New York Times reported that much of the world "is watching the United States with a mix of shock, chagrin and, most of all, bafflement." The U.S. response to the coronavirus pandemic has done extensive harm to our international standing, and as the article added, Donald Trump's refusal to honor a peaceful transition of power made matters worse.

The Times quoted a lawmaker in Myanmar -- a poor country struggling with open ethnic warfare -- saying, "I feel sorry for Americans."

Last night's presidential debate seems to have done even more damage, leaving many to ask "fundamental" questions "about the state of American democracy."

The unedifying spectacle of Tuesday night's presidential debate produced some shock, some sadness and some weariness among American allies and rivals alike on Wednesday.... Many, if not most, European analysts blamed Mr. Trump for the mess.

John Sawers, a former British diplomat, concluded, "My own response is that it makes me despondent about America."

Nicole Bacharan, a French-American historian and political analyst who lives in France, went on to tell the Times she was "dismayed," by what she saw in the debate, adding, "It sent a depressing image of the United States, of the American democracy and its role in the world."

One of the few countries that seemed delighted was China -- where there's an ongoing effort to convince its population that democracy is a bad idea.

At the debate, Trump sends dangerous signal to right-wing extremists
At a campaign event in Ohio last month, Trump turned his attention to one of his very favorite falsehoods: "You know, we're respected again. You may not feel it, although I think you do. You may not see it. You don't read about it from the fake news, but this country is respected again."

As regular readers know, it is foundational to the president's worldview: the United States was an international laughingstock for decades, Trump believes, and thanks to how awesome his awesomeness is, our global stature has finally been restored. He brings this up constantly, seeing it as one of his most important accomplishments.

International surveys, however, have shown global respect for the United States falling to unprecedented depths. Last night served as a timely reminder that the damage is ongoing, and it'll be a while before our reputation will be restored.

Scotland to Trump: Your Golfing is 'Not Essential'

Quote:
Scotish leader Nicola Sturgeon replying to reports that Donald Trump may come to Scotland to avoid the Biden-Harris inauguration stated to British press today, "Coming to play golf is not what I would consider to be an essential purpose.” She further stated that Scotland was on lockdown and that only essential personnel are permitted to travel.

With Trump out, US's global reputation improves 'dramatically'

Quote:
At a campaign event last summer, Donald Trump turned his attention to one of his very favorite falsehoods: "You know, we're respected again. You may not feel it, although I think you do. You may not see it. You don't read about it from the fake news, but this country is respected again."

As regular readers know, it has long been foundational to the Republican's worldview: the United States was an international laughingstock for decades, Trump believes, but thanks to how awesome his awesomeness is, he singlehandedly restored the nation's global stature. It was a ridiculous idea he brought up constantly, seeing it as one of his most important accomplishments.

Even in his strange farewell address, Trump found it necessary, one last time, to boast to Americans, "The world respects us again." In an apparent message for Joe Biden, the outgoing president added, "Please don't lose that respect."

It was a bizarre challenge from a failed leader who'd done extraordinary harm to the United States' international reputation. Six months later, a new report from the Pew Research Center suggests President Biden is succeeding in undoing much of the damage.

The election of Joe Biden as president has led to a dramatic shift in America's international image. Throughout Donald Trump's presidency, publics around the world held the United States in low regard, with most opposed to his foreign policies. This was especially true among key American allies and partners. Now, a new Pew Research Center survey of 16 publics finds a significant uptick in ratings for the U.S., with strong support for Biden and several of his major policy initiatives.

The findings are extraordinary. At the end of Trump's term, 83% of international respondents did not have confidence in the U.S. president to do the right thing regarding world affairs, while 17% did. Now, under Biden, 75% of international respondents do have confidence, while 22% do not.

Similarly, at the end of Trump's term, 63% of international respondents had an unfavorable view of the United States, while 34% had a favorable view. Under Biden, the results have been flipped: 62% have a favorable view, while 36% do not.

To be sure, the full report is worth reading in detail, because there are relevant nuances, some of which suggest the stain of the Trump era has not been fully erased. For example, whereas the United States has traditionally held itself out as a model for others to emulate, the Pew Research Center's findings found few abroad who see American democracy as a worthwhile model for other nations to follow.

But the topline takeaways are clearly reassuring: confidence in the U.S. presidency have soared now that Biden has replaced Trump; the United States is now more respected and seen as a reliable international partner; people abroad have greater confidence that the United States can be counted on to do the right thing; and most abroad expect U.S. relations with their respective countries to improve in the near future.

Or put another way, everything Trump said about his successes in improving the United States' standing was wrong, and it's Biden who's actually accomplishing what his predecessor felt compelled to lie about.
