Utah's Hate Crime Law Is 'Unenforceable.' A Brutal Attack In Salt Lake City Could Change That.

,HuffPost•December 5, 2018
Quote:
Luis Gustavo Lopez’s left cheekbone and eye socket shattered instantly as the five-foot metal pole cracked against his face ― a blow that would send him to the intensive care unit for several days.

The 18-year-old college student had been working at his father’s Salt Lake City tire shop on the morning of Nov. 27 when a middle-aged man he never met allegedly approached him asking if he was Mexican and hurling slurs at him.

“I’m here to kill a Mexican!” the assailant allegedly shouted. “I hate Mexicans!”

He pummeled Luis and his father Jose with the makeshift weapon, eventually knocking the teenager unconscious and leaving his 51-year-old father bloody and bruised.

On its face, the attack appears to be a cut-and-dry hate crime involving a man whose apparent hatred of Mexicans motivated him to threaten and attack members of the Latino community.

But the state didn’t charge the suspect, 50-year-old Alan Dale Covington, with a hate crime. Why? Because Utah’s hate crime code is essentially “unenforceable” and the state’s Legislature refuses to do anything about it.

here goes trump again lying.

And in this case as noted he is again with his lies putting a former president in more danger with his hate and lies. His birther talk increased the hate of the Obamas as noted. Now his lies also do the same, as we know these right wing terrorists he incites will not know the truth and go shoot up Pizza places and similar.

Trump claims there’s a 10-foot wall around the Obamas' D.C. home. Neighbors say there’s not.
Quote:
Exactly like the birther accusation, this fabricated new story endangers the Obama’s & the secret services team that protects them.

Cohen advisor: 'Charlottesville' violence explains fear of Trump

Quote:
The Senate Intelligence Committee has subpoenaed Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen, requiring his testimony before his prison sentence begins. Cohen’s legal advisor, Lanny Davis, tells MSNBC Chief Legal Correspondent, Ari Melber, that President Trump’s lawyer, Giuliani, has “committed a crime” by “threatening and impugning” Cohen’s family. Davis tells Melber that Giuliani “doesn’t have the arguable immune position of a president. He committed a crime as far as I’m concerned, and indictable, at least, crime by threatening and impugning a man’s family as a way of getting into the man’s brain. We’ve seen that in movies and Godfather 2 how you can silently threaten somebody and it’s a mob tactic that Mr. Schiff, the chairman of the intelligence committee and Mr. Cummings put out in a public statement last night”. Davis also notes that he is “not accusing Donald Trump of physically threatening” Michael Cohen, but cites violence in Charlottesville to describe the possible result of “violent words and violent threats”. Davis says that by Trump calling Michael Cohen “a rat”, the “message being sent” is “fear”.

Coast Guard lieutenant accused of murder plot 'on a scale rarely seen in this country'

Quote:
A Coast Guard lieutenant arrested earlier this week on drug and gun charges was planning to commit domestic terrorism, according to a court filing from the U.S. District Court in Maryland.

In a motion filed Tuesday, U.S. attorneys said Christopher Hasson, a lieutenant in the U.S. Coast Guard who has served at the service’s headquarters in Washington since 2016, had a hit list of targets, a cache of guns and a series of communications with white supremacists. The first sentence in the motion imploring the court to detain Hasson pending trial: “The defendant intends to murder innocent civilians on a scale rarely seen in this country.”

Per the motion, he was arrested Feb. 15 on charges of possession of a firearm and ammunition by an unlawful user or addict of controlled substances, as well as “simple possession” of an opioid. But, prosecutors write, these charges “are the proverbial tip of the iceberg.”

“The defendant is a domestic terrorist, bent on committing acts dangerous to human life that are intended to affect governmental conduct.”

Per the court document, Hasson has been serving as an acquisitions officer at the Coast Guard’s D.C. headquarters since June of 2016. Though he has not received any tactical, weapons or explosives-related training in this position, the prosecutors note that Hasson served in the Marine Corps from 1988 to 1993, followed by approximately two years of active duty with the Army National Guard. When authorities raided his residence earlier this month, they found 15 firearms and over 1,000 rounds of mixed ammunition, the document says. His detention hearing is scheduled for Thursday in Greenbelt, Md. According to a separate court filing signed Feb. 15, Hasson will be represented by a public defender.

The filing was first reported by Seamus Hughes, the deputy director of the Program on Extremism at George Washington University.

NYT publisher: Trump 'retreating from a distinctly American principle'

Quote:
New York Times publisher Arthur “A.G.” Sulzberger responded to what he called “President Trump’s continued attacks on a free press” Wednesday, hours after Trump lashed out at the paper as a “true ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE.”

Sulzberger wrote that Trump’s “demonizing the free press as the enemy, simply for performing its role of asking difficult questions and bringing uncomfortable information to light, President Trump is retreating from a distinctly American principle.”

The latest standoff between the Times and the White House followed the paper’s Tuesday publication of an in-depth examination of Trump’s efforts to discredit and derail multiple investigations into his presidential campaign and actions in office. Among the claims in the Times’ latest bombshell was one in which the president had directed his former acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker to install a Trump loyalist to take charge of an investigation by the Southern District of New York into hush money payments Trump had made to women during the 2016 presidential campaign.

Trump’s former longtime attorney, Michael Cohen, said he made those payments at Trump’s direction. Cohen has since pleaded guilty to various charges, including campaign finance.

On Wednesday, Trump blasted the paper using the same language that Sulzberger had warned the president represented a real threat to the safety of journalists worldwide.

President Trump’s efforts have exposed him to accusations of obstruction of justice as Robert S. Mueller III, the special counsel, finishes his work.

In his statement posted later in the day, Sulzberger referenced his July meeting with the president, at which he warned Trump that his frequent, derogatory characterizations of the media “will lead to violence.”

“The phrase ‘enemy of the people’ is not just false, it’s dangerous. It has an ugly history of being wielded by dictators and tyrants who sought to control public information. And it is particularly reckless coming from someone whose office gives him broad powers to fight or imprison the nation’s enemies. As I have repeatedly told President Trump face to face, there are mounting signs that this incendiary rhetoric is encouraging threats and violence against journalists at home and abroad

A video, which depicts a woman confronting a man who told her to speak English outside of a Cracker Barrel in El Paso, Texas, is making the rounds on social media thanks to the woman’s impassioned response.

Jasmin Nolan and her mother were having a conversation in Spanish outside the restaurant when a man told her, “This is America. Speak English.”

Nolan began filming the incident after the comment and the man can be heard asking, “Why can’t you speak English?”

“Oh I can — I can speak English and Spanish,” she says in the video. “I’m bilingual and in this country, I can speak whatever language I want.”

The woman also points out that the man is holding an open can of beer outside. The man defends his open container by explaining he is a veteran suffering from PTSD, while Nolan explains her husband is currently serving.

The video of the confrontation lasts nearly two and a half minutes.
