I have a simple question that I'm embarrassed to say I don't actually know the answer to. Embarassed

What's the best method for tying off the extra outhaul rope? How do you wrap it around the boom and what's the best knot to use? Up to now I've always just done "whatever works". Thanks.

I stick the free end through a hole, tie a figure 8 in it, and leave it free so I can drop into the water and adjust the outhaul in a couple of seconds anytime I wish.

Is there a difference when it comes to the extra line? I'm just curious about what to do with the extra line; not rigging the clew. I've got that part down. Laughing

Because if it's not an AO just cut it short enough that it doesn't matter. You only need MAYBE 10cm of adjustment, the rest is just excess baggage.

I always wind the excess line around the boom end, and then add a few half hitches towards the end, with a figure 8 to terminate things. Another way to do it is put a figure 8 at the end of the outhaul cleat, and let any excess hang free.

I don't have a picture of it, but you basically just wrap the line around the end of the boom on a straight part in a tight coil, loosen it just a bit, stuff the end back under all the coils, pull tight, and then twist the entire "assembly" like you're reving a motorcycle. This was described to me 30 years ago as a "Gorge trick", and I've been using it ever since. You can coil alot of line in a very small space in a very short time with this trick, and it stays put.

Eric:

That sounds intersting to me. Can you share some pictures?
I just wrap and end it with a clove hitch.

Never was a boy scout. Time to brush up on my knots. I need to work on a Bowline, Clove, and Pruskin Hitch for the single-sided Adjustable Outhaul I'm playing with.
