|

SINCE its attached to a windsurf board is it windsurfing ? specialist boards are now being made for foiling, as are sails, masts are next, how specialized does the gear need to be ? Or is this clever marketing to create a new market ?
Many forums have threads on foils. New interest has developed on mini foils, which only have a wing attached to a fin, without a trailing stabilizer wing, having now made 4 of these, they dont do much, they do increase light wind windsurfing and the possibility of planing , once winds increase they have been a handicap with excess drag. My findings so far.YMMV.
I have little interest in full scale foiling, much like I think its a activity to jump out of a good airplane.
I dont feel threads / discussions are un warranted here, I’m not interested , much like kiting.
Mini foils could be a variation of fin development which is of interest, but so far have lacked conclusive or promising results, in spite of those marketing claims. _________________ K4 fins

Nothing really new, this vid is from over 30 years ago using vintage equipment, with a dagger type foil. A bit too ahead of its time to catch on.
The equipment has obviously improved quite a bit, but so far I wouldn't call it "foil windsurfing", no waves involved, more like "foil sailboarding".

Folkes with lots of 7-15 mph breezes benefit from foiling.
Possibly us with predominant 17-23 mph breezes..or variable sub 13's, would only get a dozen or so extra days, with half of those coming up, the other half dropping to 2 mph or less.
Depends what you can afford, your interest in 7-15, and what kind of feel appeals to your senses.
I talked to one confirmed foiler last week, who foils about 130 days a year, having given up windsurfing after owning bump n jump, freeride, slalom, and Formula gear.
The "FEEL" of foiling superceded all other factors for her.
Me, at age 69,likes to think I still like the feel of power, carving g force, and speed on the verge is still my appeal...but realiaty is catching up, as is the appeal for lower impact fun seemingly on the horizon. |

Is windsurfing still sailing?
Is planing on an 8-foot board still windsurfing?
Is ripping upwind in 8 knots on a 100cm wide board, 85 cm fin and 11.5m2 sail only by flexing the fin and with 3" of water touching the hull still windsurfing?
Must a board actually touch the water to be considered windsurfing? In that sense, foiling sounds like windsurfing more than anything else but wave riding! _________________ Support Your Sport. Join US Windsurfing!

I think it is windsurfing, what do I know? Looks interesting, and I would like to try it one day. Especially since I live in a light wind part of the country. I still need to improve my skills on the gear I have. So it will have to wait. It will be interesting to see how it progresses. |

POV ??
To an old feeble bodied mowing the lawner, is modern freestyle still windsurfing? And of course, vice versa.
Wave sailing is the purest form, but the winners are all doing tricks.
But it's still ws. |

While windsurf-foiling might be considered windsurfing, one has to ask how much existing windsurfing equipment is transferrable and considered optimal in this newer version of the sport. I know that I don't have a single board that is wide enough to realistically work, and believe me I have a wealth of gear that I have dragged from the past to today.
If I was to consider foiling, it would cost me a fortune. At minimum, a new dedicated foil oriented board, and the right carbon foil. Regarding the latter, it would have to be the trick carbon product. Why buy less than the best!
Ouch, as least financially, and also logistically, that's moving into a different realm.
On top of that, learning to foil is a whole different another matter. At my age, it's a bit dicey to take the lumps. |
