Techno—it does pay to actually check statistics, and I think they make the point that birth control, not abortion, accounts for most of the decrease in teenage mothers. The abortion rate has declined dramatically, in the country and in California. The abortion rate for the US was 29.3/1000 in 1980, 21.3 in 2000, and 13.5 in 2016. For California, the rate was 44 in 1992 and had declined to 16.4 in 2016.

If you read behind the statistics you find that the reduction in abortions is a result of birth control. Most of the decrease happened before evangelicals and the GOP launched efforts to restrict abortion. Those efforts have only slightly decreased abortion rates. There are other studies that show that restricting birth control—I believe it was in Texas—led to an increase in abortions.

Rather than snipe Techno, do you support greater access to contraception as a method to both reduce poverty and reduce abortion?

Absolutely.

Not dead yet: How exciting, can you imagine the mass of people wanting to take the train from San Jose to Bakersfield. Liberal boondoggle at the max.

Facing war with Trump, troubled California bullet train pushes biggest contract ever

The California bullet train authority is moving ahead with an aggressive plan to issue its biggest contract in history, steering into sharp criticism by federal regulators and even the state-appointed peer review panel that it is overreaching.

The agency took a key step last week toward issuing a 30-year-long contract to install track, set up high-voltage electrical lines, create a digital signaling system, build a heavy maintenance train garage and obligate future maintenance of the equipment and track.

It would cover future track from San Jose to Bakersfield, more than half the proposed Los Angeles-to-San Francisco system. It would lock the state into a maintenance contract, as well as equipment, on segments that it currently does not have money to build.

Rail authority Chief Executive Brian Kelly defended the plan as fulfilling the mission to build an electrified high-speed rail system and said it is essential to comply with federal grant agreements.

But a stinging letter from the Federal Railroad Administration, which oversees the grants, warned the state Monday not to move forward with the plan, raising a series of legal and operational objections.

“It is premature for [the rail authority] to undertake another major design-build contract,” the letter said. “The current construction packages continue to face significant and continuing delays building the necessary civil construction.”
The day after the letter arrived, the California High-Speed Rail Authority voted to take the next major step in that contract process, asking for bids from three international teams that could result in an award in 2020 and a notice to begin the work by September.

The bullet train project obtained two grants during the Obama administration for a total of about $3.5 billion. Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Transportation terminated a 2010 grant for $929 million that had not been spent. The state sued to reverse the decision.

Moreover, federal officials have warned that they intend to claw back an additional $2.5 billion that has been spent, because the state violated the agreement. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao called the project a “classic bait and switch” after Gov. Gavin Newsom curtailed the project earlier this year.

Meanwhile, thyroid cancer rates in North Carolina are going through the roof with possible links to coal ash contamination. Conservative poisoning their own people & then turning a blind eye while they rake in profits.

Fill me in if I am missing something.

Scientists: No coal ash found in Iredell County drinking water, but more research needs to be done Duke Energy said the company will continue to cooperate and wants to be part of all new research into coal ash and the thyroid cancer question.

STATESVILLE, N.C. — A meeting was held Thursday night in Statesville where residents hoped to learn more about what is behind an unusually high number of thyroid cancer cases in Iredell County.

Many neighbors question if the cause is the 17 million tons of coal ash stored at the nearby Duke Energy Marshall Steam Station.

Duke spokesperson Bill Norton said that's not the case.
“The state has looked at decades worth of national and international research, and the good news is they found there is no connection between thyroid cancer and coal ash.

Scientists at Thursday night's meeting at South Iredell High School said there was no coal ash found in drinking water in that area, but more research needs to be done.

State Senator Vickie Sawyer said she's going to continue to fight for answers.
"This is very, very close to me. I have two daughters, and so this is something that has sparred and makes me ask these hard questions," she said.

Duke Energy said the company will continue to cooperate and wants to be part of all new research into coal ash and the thyroid cancer question.
Clearly, there is something going on in Iredell County. Statistics show 11.6 cancer cases per 100,000 people statewide. In Iredell County, the number jumps to 21.8 cases.

I'm no big fan of the high speed rail, and knew enough of the players to know that the promises were overstated. Kind of like those that Trump makes every five minutes.

The sucker bet was that this would be lower carbon emission than air travel. Maybe if we started with no airports and no airline fleets...

But it is a pretty tame form of political influence when compared to hijacking aid for Ukraine--and strengthening Russia's hand--in order to entice foreign governments into our elections.

You are not missing anything, you just don't care. Close your eyes, cover your ears & shout la, la, la, la.... That is the typical response. But here is the data you requested.

The cause is and will probably remain unknown but there tends to be one common denominator. Lack of regulations. I fully understand over regulation but to have none, insane.

Life expectancy, obesity, cancer, heart disease, suicide are just a few issues the conservative states lead the nation in yet you continue to turn a blind eye. And now with the opioid problem the death rates for the ages 24-57 in the conservative heartland have skyrocketed. America is losing a whole generation and you just keep singing la, la, la. Nothing is wrong, everything is great.
