Back in the eighties, windsurfing was and looked like a cool sport. Sails were brightly colored and it all looked very visually appealing.
I was out of the sport for a lot of years and when I came back the sails seemed to be mostly colorless except for small patches of color.
They looked to me like insect wings - interesting to windsurfers but not to others.
Is it my imagination or are sails becoming more bright and colourful again?

Good observation... and yes, everything you say is absolutely correct.
And in case you're wondering why this happened? It's (among other things) a combination of - function, performance, and marketing.
Windsurf sails were made from dacron for the first decade. The first ones were white, but "good marketing" quickly made them colorful. And that's what you saw.
Then the performance advantage of monofilm was developed. And all the windsurf sails went clear, except for small strips of color around the perimeter and the batten pockets.
But after a while, good marketing thought, "we need to make these things more visible again". And now, there have been colorful monofilm sails for many years. And of course, some brightly colored dacron sails have also been marketed by some brands in the last 10 years.

Off topic...
Joe, that's a cool looking sail. But one suggestion might be - try reducing the batten tension, especially that foot batten. It was way too much tension.
"S"-ing is a bad sign. If you reduce batten tension, and get a couple wavy wrinkles out in the sail panel area, it's not such a big deal. The S shaped batten is a bigger deal, and should be eliminated.
Ok, thanks...

Actually, S'ing is just a sign of max downhaul, and normal for lots of 2 cam to no cam sails.
However, most sailors don't downhaul Superfreaks that much since those sails can be sheeted out to depower.

I disagree. Sail designers don't make sails, that are supposed to have battens bent into S shapes when properly rigged. Even sitting on the beach, unloaded. Nope, I've talked to enough sail designers... I do not agree this is the way your sail is supposed to look.
And if someone added so much downhaul, that this happened without excess batten tension, then reduce the downhaul.
Or the mast is wrong.
Something is not correct, when you see a batten bent into an "S".
PS - I was going to add (but it's not a big deal)... if I was sailing that sail in the pic. I would reduce downhaul tension. However, the first priority is I would get rid of that "S". And reducing batten tension will probably do that. Downhaul might be a separate issue.

the only sail i have heard where S is suggested was KONA sails
am i dreaming - or requiring medicinal hemp ??
soon legal up north and in many states
will it impact windsurfing ??
back to the sixties ??
put colours in sails, do the hemp thingie and get on the water
