There does not appear to be any irregularities in the repair... so does that mean the primer should do?

Is this the 3m putty you're referring to?



This is a random photo from the web. I can't see this product listed on 3M's US or Canadian site. I wonder if its still available? The closest listed product I found is below and called a "Glazing Putty". It is only listed on 3M's US site; not Canada. I'm not sure if I can get it here if if it is equivalent.

I have used the one in the lower picture (05095) for years. You can purchase it at West Marine. I only wish it came in a smaller tube. My 25 year old tube is getting a bit dried out.

I've left a message with 3M Canada to see if/where I might find Acryl Marine Putty locally.

In the meantime, I went to an automotive paint specialist today. I located a CMAX which is the paint division of NAPA. They prepared a custom color match of a base coat and provided a light grey primer and a Satin clear coat. Hopefully the clear coat will also work for the anti skid stage.

I also found a small bottle of this stuff:

Will it be OK to use as the anti-skid? It feels finer than the factory anti-skid but this is the ONLY thing I've found remotely close.

It says easy to USE. What are the instructions ?

I would think to sprinkle on the top paint coat, then spray the clear coat over, if thats your intend. The clear coat is unnecessary IMO, and will be slippery , like the paint .

Yes, I used to match my paint at the auto paint store also. A great (if
relatively expensive) way to get it close.

You can always spray in some sugar (which is what we did for years before
there was acrylic dust available). I'd lay down the primer, dry, a coat of the color paint, dry, another coat of the color paint, sift on some sugar, let dry, and then maybe spray on a thin clear coat. Once dry you can lightly sand the finish to expose the sugar, run water over the area to dissolve most of the sugar,
and voila, a dandy surface that's just right. Actually I'm a salt fan myself,
but fine sugar will match your board finish better.

There is sort of an art to it, so maybe practice on something else 1st.

p.s. or you could do the same with some purchased acrylic dust. Most plastic stores in the US (like TAP) have that stuff.

Primed and sanded. I decided to skip the putty and go straight to primer.

I'm now ready for the satin clear coat and the anti-skid.

Questions first.

Do I need to sand the base coat before I apply the clear or can I lay the clear coat directly down? As you see, the edges of the paint look kind of "hard" from where the masking was removed. What are your thoughts on if/how I should feather this? Would I feather the paint, feather the clear, feather the anti-skid, or just leave it as is?

I'm also looking for feedback on the application of the clear coat and anti skid as I'm at this stage.

My thinking is this:
1. One layer of clear coat on the base coat. Dry.
2. Second layer of clear coat. While wet, sprinkle the anti-skid. Dry.
3. 3rd and final layer of clear coat over top of the anti-skid. Dry and COMPETE.

Anyone object to this thinking? Thoughts and comments welcome.

I'd feather that in with the colored paint 1st, but you'll need to feather it all in.

2 layers of clear coat is probably sufficient.

Sand the existing edges, then respray over the edges , overlap

2 layers of clear is sufficient, it wont change the color. Since you are using , sprinkles , I dont know how many layers.

If thats the color match, Walmart would be as good

Looks good except color match, I would have painted it a contrast color.
