|
|
went out with side shore 20+ kph winds
gusts over 15 knots
thought of going across and tacking on other side in case anything went wrong
wind was blowing me more south and away from the point
ah, what can go wrong ??
separated from board and spent two hours in cold water before being rescued
many things done wrong, but ended well - just a lost $200 board
Eric is upset because he fixed that board up
the intention was for me to join him in local races
oh well - local authorities, forums and clubs have been advised

Did the sail separate from the board in some untoward way? Did something break? |

nothing broke
the mast foot came OUT of the board
when i purchased the board, I asked Eric if he thought this was solid
he had said yes
when i left shore it seemed ok ...
was considering going to other side before tacking
wind blew me downwind of the point
thought what could go wrong ??
Eric told me i should know to attach mast/sail to board
i have NOT done that in 20+ years of windsurfing
NO other mast foot EVER came out
they came apart when i was modifying them ... but otherwise NO issues
MANY lessons learned
only thing was - lost the board for now
somehow with all the people n places I contacted, i am having high hopes
and YES, i would ride a D2 again !! |

Thanks for sharing a bit of your event, and good luck in finding your lost board. |

Glad you're okay!
Fear of rig separation is one reason some of us only use two bolt mast feet. And pay close attention to the health of our unis. _________________ Michael

Wow, Joe, crazy story and I'm glad that you made it home! That water is really cold for a two hour swim! It's a good reminder to the rest of us to always dress for the worst case scenario- we often have 75 degree air in the spring, but the water is still only in the mid 40s... _________________ formerly known as hodad.andy

Yes to what Andy said. Spring conditions are especially treacherous as most windsurfers are coming back from an extended off-season. Warm winds are enticing, cold water isn't unbearable with a light wetsuit until it isn't. I'm glad you are OK. _________________ Support Your Sport. Join US Windsurfing!

Glad you are okay man! Exactly what happened to me as posted here a few years ago on the fanatic ultra cat. In that case I instinctively ditched the rig and swam like crazy for the board. It was about as far as in your video in much higher waves/wind but chasing it seemed to be the only way out. Stressful for sure as those long boards just ride high and take off. I would say I swam for 100 yards or so to catch it and seemed like forever. Swimming with a full suit, pfd and harness really creates drag but for survival I think the only move is towards the board unless you are closer to a land point.
The lake water is still quite cold here in Maine too, full 3/2 or 4/3 with booties for now even though air temp is hot on the board vs water. |

Yes... first... glad you're ok Joe!!
Next - what a shame to lose a board you spent a lot of time researching and shopping for... and that a lot of us spent time helping you learn about it I hope you're lucky and you get it back!
Next - It's too bad you didn't realize that most all 80's boards have TERRIBLE mast bases. The mast foot connection on most 80's boards are crap, compared to the 90's designs.
The original Windsurfer was the worst, yet people dealt with it and the sport flourished. The first decent mast base connections were designed by Alpha and Mistral. Both were totally different and unique, but both were quite reliable and functional. All the other brands (100 different design ideas) were not very good. But we didn't know any different. We read the owner's manual, we learned from the shop guys... if you were careful, things usually worked fine. I sailed many different 80's longboards, all with different mast foot designs and rarely had one pull out of a board... but it did happen occasionally.
Did you use the "safety leash" set-up, it originally came with?
Actually, I'm not certain your brand board came with a safety leash, but most did. All brands quickly designed better mast foot systems as windsurfing got so popular... and people sailed in more wind... and the Windsurfer set-up was found to be in adequate. But even though all the mast feet got better through the 80's... some of them would still come out, at the wrong time. People died out in the Ocean, cause their rig separated from their board... and if you couldn't swim fast enough to catch your board, you were dead. So they all had a safety leash, and it was REQUIRED that you use it. Most all these were very effective at keeping your rig connected to your board, in case the mast foot came out.
All windsurfers who sailed 80's boards know this.
Most windsurfers who sailed 90's boards knew this about 80's boards, even though they didn't have this issue in the 90's (cause they were WAY better, just like the current stuff).
But most newer windsurfers, people who just got into it in the 2000's - don't know as much about this important feature.
It's too bad your local friend who helped you with this project didn't teach you all this... cause I'm sure he knows it.
You're a big, strong guy, who went out on a new board... with old features you're not really knowledgeable about... in kinda windy conditions... without a safe landing spot... and the mast foot came out of the board... which can easily happen uphauling!!
And that's why the safety leash has to be used.
Yes as you said, BIG lessons learned... glad you're ok!!
