Hi all,
My board seems heavy. I finally went and got a bathroom scale and it weighed 17 lbs with three dry footstraps, a plastic mast base, and 2 thruster fins. When I looked online, the listed weight was 14.5 lbs (with a 0.6% variance disclaimer). I am assuming that is the raw board with no straps and fins. Should I be concerned? I popped the vent plug and let it sit in the sun. No water came out.

Weigh yourself while holding the board and without. A bathroom scale at the lowest end of calibration I wouldn't expect the greatest accuracy. Unless your board is huge, I'll ride a 17 lb board. My best boards are heavier than that. |

In the real world with all the parts on, that's a very lite board. |

2.5 lbs of skeg and strap is possible, and like the others here have said
17lbs is really light. Most of my boards whether epoxy or glass are heavier than that with straps and skeg (and in some cases thrusters)
If it really bugs you, drill a hole in the tail at the end of the season,
and let the board sit upright with the vent plug open with a paper towel
under the drilled hole for a week or 2 (in a low humidity environment).
If you see no evidence on the paper towel, you should be good.
Also, now that you have a base weight of 17lbs, you can weigh it in a
week or 2 and see if it has gained any weight.
My epoxy boards always seem to be gaining weight, until I baseline them,
and weigh them when the season is over. Since I really hate having to think
about that, I may go back to boards with non-hydrophilic cores. They start heavy, but they won't take on water ;*)

p.s. what type of board is it?
p.p.s. maybe you should put the vent plug back in and let it sit in the sun
to see if water oozes out anywhere. When I've had problems, that's how
I've found them.

A few years ago I purchased a commercial retail scale on craig's list just for weighing my boards....ended these type of questions for me. Now I weigh all my boards with and without straps and MB when I purchase them
I purchased a used RRD WaveCult at the last swapmeet, so I just weighed this board with and without S&MB. So just for your info here are my results.
Bare RRD...13.34 lbs.
RRD with dry straps, and two bolt Chinook mounted....14.79lbs.
So in this case the three straps and Chinook weigh 1.45 lbs. This is a certified commercial scale, accurate to a couple of hundredths, up to 40 lbs.

This is all very helpful. The board is a relatively new 2015 Goya One 85L. My other board is a 2009 Goya One 95L and though 10 liters larger and 6 years older weighs 1.5 less than the board in question. I may try drilling the hole near the tail after the season and see if any water comes out. |

Is it possible to weigh your board with all hardware removed?
That might give you an idea of it's actual weight. |

Seems that there is much to do about nothing here, EXCEPT if the board is taking on water. That's the only meaningful issue. |

does ANYONE else here think it is ok to drill a hole in the board if you THINK it is a little heavy, but are NOT sure there is water ?? |

Guys,
I'm just trying to figure out if there is water in the board. If there is, I think getting the water out and perhaps addressing the location where the water is getting in is worth it. Maybe I'm just nuts. |
