Are there any shops that regrip booms in the SF Bay Area? |

Kevin Kahn at Sunset Sailboards was doing it for some of his
customers at one time. |

Having regripped a number of booms in my youth, I can say that it works
great except that in my case the grip removal ends in blood, or a caustic
toxic mess. It makes you realize Kevin's price is pretty reasonable (if
you have a carbon boom). It is pretty gratifying once completed though.
and some people have much more time than money.

As with anything, your first boom regrip will probably not be flawless.
You could easily spend 3 ours on it, at least 2.
Look at the videos, and gauge if it's something you really want to do.
Otherwise, Kevin's price is VERY reasonable.
On the plus side, he can stand the fumes, he doesn't have many neurons left to destroy.
I kid, I kid. |

A few years back, Derek at Delta Windsurf re-gripped my Maui Sails carbon wave boom with black Chinook boom grip. He did an excellent job. While it cost me slightly less than Kevin's current price, it was probably 5-6 years ago.
Today, I think that $150 is definitely a fair price. I'm not sure what brand of boom grip that Kevin is using, but the price for the grip material can vary a bit. Chinook's is $23.50 versus Maui Sails' at $35.00. Streamlined's could be even more. |

If a carbon boom, you might consider skipping the regripping itself. Scrape off all foam and as much contact cement as reasonably possible. Do not sand clean if at all. You should be left with somewhat textured carbon tubes that offer terrific grip. I surprised myself with this once and never replaced the foam. _________________ Support Your Sport.
