Not true. My wife's Laser has full, radial and 4.7 sails plus bottom spars for each of those.

I know what a Laser is, can you translate the rest for windsurfers ? |
Not much to translate. There are three sails: full, radial and 4.7. First is around 7 sq. m, second is about 6 and 4.7 is 4.7sq.m
Each of those needs a separate bottom section (spar) of the mast. Top spar is the same. Total 3 sails and 3+1 spars.

I assume the top spar is the same as a mast, and the lower is a boom ? _________________ K4 fins

Comparing sailing a boat with a windsurfer may be like apples vs oranges. I know a good sailor that prefers a one-sail quiver. Most of us mere mortals are the weak link. It's easier to learn with multiple sails, and then once we improve we stick with what we know as a personal preference.

Excuse me, I know a good sailor who has NO sails. _________________ K4 fins

Nope.
Same as the most of modern windsurfing masts, Laser mast has 2 sections: top spar and bottom spar. Top spar is the same for all configurations. For each of the three sail types (full, radial and 4.7) there are separate bottom spars. Plus, boom. So, total is 5 spars

Thanks so much. The mast has 2sections, wow, the bottom section has 3 different lengths to accommodate different size sails. And the boom , like the top of the mast , fits all. But you call all 5 spars.
Think I got it. _________________ K4 fins

But the great majority of adult Laser sailors have only rig - usually the full rig.
Junior sailors usually use either the radial or the 4.7, and while some who are around the body-size where they will transition from one rig to another, or who have already transitioned, might have two rigs.., they compete with one. Jr regattas usually don't include full rig fleets.
It's not as if Laser sailors are on the beach wondering what rig to use for a race.
I happen to sail in an adult Laser fleet where adults can use either the radial or the full rig. I would guess maybe 10-20% of the fleet have both full rigs and radials to choose from. |

Thanks for all the Laser info. My boat is a Zuma, which uses some of the Laser parts. I made a jib for it, from a winidsurf sail. In 5-10mph it is good fun, an option over a windsup . _________________ K4 fins
