As glitzy as vertical storage sounds and looks, it seems to me to offer the wind a much greater chance of buffeting the rig around unnecessarily without a pretty elaborate structure. The lazy susan concept probably eliminates the vertical storage pivot issue. but doesn't provide a rigging area like a platform extension would. Widening the deck surface just 3-4 feet would probably give decent rigging and storage space, and if you kept your weight on the deck (i.e., don't walk on the extension), the extension could be light and easy to transport seasonally.
I'm trying to picture someone sticking a vertical 7.5 into a mast base when the wind starts gusting > 20. |
Or removing the same 7.5 m sail . I dont like the overall concept of storing the sail on this. I agree with ISO, bag this concept and work with what you have. _________________ K4 fins

This the former site of Conca D’Oro Windsurfing Center. My wife and I took our honeymoon in Italy and sailed from that location. (I dropped my wedding band into the lake right at that ramp. Wife laughed and declared I could never wear her diamond ring! We remain married.) _________________ Support Your Sport. Join US Windsurfing!

I also have sailed from that site about 18 years ago, and even farther
off topic, I also lost a wedding band to windsurfing, though not in Torbole.
Apparently Windsurfing is a jealous mistress as well as a fickle one ;*)
-Craig (also still married to the same woman I started with 43 years ago)

When you are out, do waves pound the dock or is it fairly smooth? Is the wind whipping the deck variably from all directions or in a stable direction? If the latter of both of those, can you just leave your extra rig in the water downwind behind, in front, along the side, or under the dock using some ropes from two dock pilings to two points on the rig with some well placed foam noodles for padding and floatation? Maybe won’t work.
The Shaka setup mentioned by Coachg is pretty neat if your wind doesn’t flip around much more than 90 degress and you could put a cup/bar at front, back and side of dock to handle different wind directions.
(Oh, and I also lost my wedding ring) |

Except the wind at Shaka does shift more than 90 degrees. It shifts 180 degrees, every day at lunch. In the morning it blows from the north, takes a one hour lunch break & then blows from the south in the afternoon. Just about every day, all summer long.
Dan, you have a great excuse to go back. Gotta search for the wedding band.

Justall,
It's mostly onshore or side shore. Waves are not too bad, but i've tried leaving the sail in the water and it gets washed around and bumps into the dock too much. Also, due to neighbors, i have limited space in water. I have a great idea for the pivoting sail stand on a pole. I'm determined to try it. Probably $20 in parts from Home depot and It should hold my weight standing and trying to bend it. I will also require no stand. Just a pole. Think of a pole dancer spinning on a pipe.
I'll try and post a photo in a few weeks when I get it done. |
