I do not wear a helmet foiling, so no I don’t fall under your “monkey see” philosophy! But as an instructor I absolutely encourage anyone if they felt more safe to wear safety equipment.

Any Foiler is quite aware of potential injuries from falling backwards, especially beginners! we (Windsurfer’s) have taught ourselves to let go of the boom and get away from the equipment in a wipeout...as mentioned it’s better to hold onto the boom when foiling. However falling backwards with the back of your head towards the wing and fuselage could be potentially nasty outcome. Don’t be so quick to judge others.

See, there's the problem...Never let go of boom until everything stops moving..every advanced windsurfer knows that.
Just like, when you fall off your motorcycle, STAY Down for an additional 5 count, before attempting to get up and right the bike.

"The argument FOR wearing a helmet is weak..."

If you look into the future, safety becomes ever more important over time. Just look at many different sports today, and you'll see recognition from leading authorities that safety and protection is a paramount concern.

The way that I like to look at it moving on, safety oriented products can be a focus of innovation and development. Case in point, are F1 drivers still using the same stuff to ensure safety on the track as cars and rules from the 80s or 90s?

While the Gath Helmet has its flaws, it's still an awesome product that serves many quite well in windsurfing and other demanding water sports.
