Sort of surprised no one has mentioned Stevenson which, despite being a time capsule from the early days of the sport, is an awesome place for beginners or intermediates to get their game going.

Not even a decent place to launch in Stevenson, and wind rarely gets over 10 mph. There's absolutely no reason to go there, except as you say, to look at windsurfing museum pieces.

Sure ... and don't forget the rattlesnakes, drug dealers, poison oak, barbed wire fishing nets, jet ski hordes, thieves, blizzards, and plutonium deposits.

In all seriousness, the Port of Skamania County is getting ready to compete for events like we just saw in Hood River. I think it has a ton of potential, and it's closer to Portland.

Have a look at what's being planned:

Mark my words - this will turn into an ugly turf war. The fact of the matter is that there is not enough territory for everyone with the access that currently exists and those that are in charge of providing access (or managing it) are only interested in maximizing the $$ they bring in from that access. I love the comments by the "appeasement" crowd because they are so feckless. Hey, send them over hear or there or to Stevenson... really? You think that is a long-term solution? How about - try Irrigon! That won't work because it is really about making sure there is a waiting line for the bars and restaurants on the waterfront and in town - like there is not one already... It's like somebody who gets hit in a crosswalk by a car and argues that they had the right of way. Pay attention or get run over - it does not matter who has the right of way if you are in the hospital. The fact of the matter is the Port needs to learn when to say "NO"
The CGWA needs to be heard and needs to work directly with the port and the city. Bart also needs to remind them who this was all about originally in the first place. Don't forget - the windsurfers are responsible either directly or indirectly for nearly everything positive that has occurred in HR and elsewhere when it comes to river access - they have been the impetus for almost all of it. To just let it get eaten up by any user that comes along is a real crime. Protect your turf or later on you will just be another one of those whiny people that wonders "what happened?"

^^^

I understand your frustration. Completely understandable, especially for those involved in the early stages of windsurfing access on Port property. Understandable for those who bought season passes. Frustrating for those who get their after work fix, and are blocked for over a week in the height of the season.

That said, moving forward I think we all benefit from more recreationalists wanting access to The Columbia: Windsurfers/Kiters/Sup/Canoe /Fishermen etc...

Through compromise, and cooperation I think there is significant win-win potential, that would not exist if only windsurfers wanted access, purely because of sheer numbers of folks.

The Outrigger folks did not intentionally block out others. They simply like the venue and were given the opportunity to book it. I doubt The Port meant to frustrate Park users. It may have been as simple as the person booking--booked it.

Eric the Outrigger folks did intentionally block out others, they booked the Waterfront Park from the City Of Hood River for hosting their event and storing their craft. They also booked the Luhr Jensen parking area from the Port Of Hood River for parking and shuttle loading. They knew exactly what they were doing. Essentially they took over the swimming beach at the Park, the steps down to the launch, the grass area and the parking. Very little allowance was made for other users, therein lies the problem. If the event is bigger next year, it has increased in size with each iteration, they may well take over the Event Site as well. I think the city, port and other stakeholders need to sit down and discuss how they want to proceed and consider other user groups as well.

How does one group's "booking" override a season pass ... aka booking?

What does such a "booking" cost? Can any individual book the place for, say, July just to reduce the crowds?

Looking at the bigger picture, groups, gaggles, mobs, and other such informal bunches often claim they're "reserved" this or that park along the Columbia. This particular booking sounds formal and legitimate, giving passholders little immediate relief, but many are just bluster, often ilegal and thus meaningless. I've seen other park users threatened by such groups if they don't leave, but calls to the Corps straighten that out pretty quickly. It behooves all of us to know enough of the rules to distinguish between legal reservations and bluster, decide what we want to do about it, and try to change such a situation next time.

But ... REALLY ... reserving a world-renown an locally treasured venue for a week in the peak month of the year? I hope the city made enough money to offer free access to everyone else for the rest of the season.

Venting on this forum is all well and good for sharing ideas - but ultimately you need to communicate with the Port.

One idea is to join the CGWA and be active and communicate with Bart.
email Bart -> https://gorgewindsurfing.org/contact/

Also talk to the people on the Hood River Waterfront Advisory council -

Waterfront Recreation Committee: (Commissioner Ben Sheppard)
Members: TJ Gulizia, Pepi Gerald, Sam Bauer, Mark Hickock (HRV Parks & Rec), Adam Lapierre (CGKA), Bart Vervloet (CGWA); Daryl Stafford (Port Staff)

The Waterfront Recreation Committee is an advisory group that investigates, discusses, and collects information related to a variety of waterfront activities on behalf of the Port of Hood River. Committee members are appointed by the Commission for a three-year term and generally meet in the spring and fall, or as needed for special projects.

Unfortunately this beautiful town is in the process of gentrification, and with it comes the monetization of what were formerly public facilities. We've seen this in real time in a mountain town we live near, and it always plays out the same. The business interests that have been allowed to spring up along the waterfront will eventually set the path - I can't imagine any of them NOT wanting large groups of potential customers taking over the waterfront every possible weekend. In fact, look for the 2nd Annual "fill in name here" sponsored by Ferment coming soon.

IMHO the best approach is Eric's - make sure the legal entities like the Port and the City are aware of the entire user community. Sounds like something the CGWA can take up.
