I finally sold my Exocet WindSUP 10' after years of good fun with this board.
But it was getting too heavy, I am not interested in SUP mode anymore and maybe would like to try foiling in the future.
So I am looking for the next big thing (board) ....
What do you guys think of the Thommen GLEITWUNDER??
http://www.thommen1.com
I'll attach a few pictures found on the internet too.
If I read the marketing description, that looks just what I am looking for...
I am an intermediate level sailor, I sail most of the time alone and miles from the shore in the winter in Italy in offshore winds mostly and choppy water. I want a light wind board that can safely bring me back to the shore. A board that performs too, I sometimes sail with some slalom boys and want a board that keeps on planing in the lulls.
I weigh 75-80kg. What size board would suit me?
GWR M @ 145L 255x80
GWR L @ 165L 265x84
My WindSUP was 175L so I have the feeling the 165L would be a good size.
But how about foiling? Is that not too big, or would that work for a newbie just trying out a foil. This board would NOT be a dedicated foilboard, I just like the idea that I can try a foil (or rent or buy used) a few times and see if I like it.
I guess for my weight I could go for the 145L model but I think it will be more difficult at my homespot, a bay with more confused waves than wind. I would need the volume..
One thing about this Thommen board is the price 2.300 euros for the board, 150 extra for the foilbox. Are there some similar boards on the market these days, that cost less maybe?? I am a bit out of the loop.
btw my second board is a Flikkaboards FreeWave 107L. I love this board, made in Slovenia
The Gleitwunder is constructed in the same shop. I had bad experiences with my last 2 Cobra boards

Extremely unlikely anyone has or have ridden this in the US.
Is this being made in the FLIKKA factory ?

That's a lot of volume for your weight. I'm 95kg and 130L works fine in similar conditions plus with a foil.
Anything you can uphaul will get you home unless the wind totally dies or (as in my home spot) there is a fast tidal current.

"light wind board that can get me home"
what do you call light wind ??
i like the length of these Thommen Gleit Wunder
Gleit Wunder means Gliding Miracle
older raceboards were long n narrow for gliding
at 70 kilos - you can go 125, 135 or 145 liters
width will be the major factor
what will be your largest sail ??
take that and multiply by 10
that is one way to check the width
for sails 6-10 meters
wish those boards were in N. America !!

That's interesting. My biggest sail right now is a North X-Type 7.8 (which needs replacement sooner or later)
So that would be 78cm than. In fact my WindSUP was 80cm wide and so is the GWR M @ 145L.
I am interested in the Morphosails 8.4, which indeed would suit the GWR L @ 165L with 84cm width exactly. Mark who is the dealer for both the Thommenboards and Morphysails suggests me the 165L, extra volume for Med conditions and because it planes earlier.
I could also buy an Ezzy Cheetah 8.0 in very good condition for less than half the price of a new 8.4 Morpho, don't know if it all makes a difference..
Mark tells me the Morpho's are very light in the top with the scrim material and are cut for power so you can pump them easily on the plane. They have one batten less than a Cheetah. I have a quiver of 4.2, 4.7, 5.5 wave sails of Ezzy and love the durability and sail range. Loose the out hole and the sail becomes one size more powerfull.

I think it looks very interesting. I have a Flikka and would definitely get one again. I say try to communicate with Thommen if you can. I bet you can if you try.

Just an update.
I have been talking to Luka from Flikka.
He proposes me their new Freeride shape at 150L, same idea and concept as the Gleitwunder. Double concaves to eat chop, fast slalom rocker line, single fin, tail cutouts. Their shape has a little more volume in the nose, just what I want.
Initially his propose was 255cm X 85cm
I asked Luka about Joe's rule and since my largest sail will be a 7.8 or 8.0 he agrees that 80cm wide would be better. They can adjust the shape for that width, no problem.
I also asked him about some custom mods including: grab handle to carry the board SUP style, leash plug on the nose to carry the board with my bike using SUPWheels, EVA nose protector, reinforced Deep Tuttle Box. Guess what, all without surcharge! Custom paint job only 100€ extra
I am going to order in Carbon Biaxal construction with extra Dyneema reinforcements on nose, rails, mast track etc. and it will still cost a few 100€ less than the Thommen.
Will keep you guys posted....
