I'm thinking of buying a $60 used sewing machine and trying to replace myself a bunch of panels in expensive sails that I really liked but have ripped.
I have so many (20) older sails that I don't use, many with nearly new mono film or X-ply panels which I could use for my ripped sails.
Why can't I cut a panel to fit and sew myself ?
Does anyone have experience trying this ? Or comments. ?
I can't afford having a professional shop do it, and the cost would be more than value of sail.

Go for it. Bud of mine replaced a main panel of his bud's favorite and most used 7.3, the results totally positive.

i would think you would need a "heavy duty" or industrial version. $60 sounds on the cheaper/light duty side. my sewing machine is labeled "heavy duty" at $200 and that i don't think is strong enough......don't forget the needle....that has to be a certain strength....

Lofts cut sail panels to tolerances of... what? ... hundredths of an inch? ... to avoid screwing up the sail's performance. And when replacing panels, they re-use the original thread holes to avoid the "tear across the dotted line" syndrome. Be careful, if your swim is long where you sail.

Do you have any good swap meets in your neighborhood?

Ha ha....thks.....yea.....i have a feeling the sail would never perform as intended after.....
Maybe i'll just cut pieces to tape over ripped section.

Is it possible to stitch a patch of mono film onto mono film?
I could ad glue ? And tape ???

Again....im going for super budget. .....i wont pay for repairs.....new sails.....or expensive used ones.......

I calculated once....i had 37 sails....ave price of $17.45

Lots free.......most expensive $65.......I got two 2015 Simmer's "A" condition at $37.50 each this year. You gotta be clever. ..cagey...and quick. I've picked up 9.0, 7.9, 6.9 with 2 matching masts for free last year.

A good point, but the $17.45 is average, so some were free, some were prob $39.99. LOL

If the panel is replaced with a near equal TYPE material I dont see why it wouldn’t perform near to new, considering its overall age.

Putting mono on top of mono would work, but be heavier, with no gain in performance , just repaired.

The issue here IMO is a machine that will sew through several layers, depending on where //which panel.

How could anyone know they had/have 37sails ?

My advise is ask a repair specialist like :::

https://m.facebook.com/WindAngelSailRepair/

She is in Hatteras and her work is excellent and reasonable beyond words.

A normal sewing machine will never work ...

Why waste the money on a sewing machine. Just sew a new panel over the
top by hand using dental floss (it's waxed so it glides pretty well once you've punched through the hole). That way, you'll still be able to claim a
low cost of ownership

Better yet, just be " clever. ..cagey...and quick" and pick up another like you have in the past.

Personally, I'd just tape the thing up with packing tape and call it good.
