Is it necessary to remove the vent screw completely to allow it to vent or just loosen it in between days on the water? |

Been discussed endlessly, with no consensus. SEARCH for the discussions if you need details, but I never touch mine. |

If you are going to fuss with the vent screw, take it completely out and put it in the center of the two bolt chinook base....that way you will always remember to put it in the board and tighten it.
If you just loosen it, I guarantee that you will go sailing with it loose at some point and the board will suck water.
If you don't use a two bolt chinook, leave it in an leave it tight.

What Keith said.....
and what Mike said (except I might take mine out going
from sea level to a mile high or more)

I did but they seemed to be mostly on the side of loosen vent or leave tightened. But my question was more if you do loosen it should you remove completely or just undo a bit.
What I'm worried about is that I store the board sideways under a tarp outside summer and winter so it's exposed to humidity that could drip down the board and into the vent hole.
The temperature extremes would make the core expand and contract. 40 in the summer sun to -30 in winter |

In that case, I would just loosen it a few turns and then cover the area around it with a piece of duct tape, taking care to leave the bottom of the duct tape loose, maybe put a straw down there to ensure that there is freedom of air movement in and out of the vent.
This way if water drips down the board the duct tape will keep it out of the vent hole.

When I travel from sea level to my house, items expand (6500 feet above sea level )
Bags of potatoe chips have burst . When going from lower to higher and vise versa I take it out. Not unscrew , out.
If you are forgetful , like you cant remember to install your pants daily, then make some remainder to re install . It’s easier than brushing your teeth.
Once at the sea level location I leave them in, until departure. _________________ K4 fins

The rubber washer is what makes it air and water tight, not the screw.
A few turns is enough. |

Another reason to remove , rather than unscrew, you can inspect the condition of the rubber washer, which seems vital.
And how come some boards with a screw dont have a washer ?
No not a goretex one. _________________ K4 fins
