Boards that are said to be quads. Some have said in the makers description that that can be sailed as twins , other dont say anything at all.

I brought up Tabou cause it is the one I was familiar with. If the rear fin placement is too close to the rail, I feel a twin doesnt perform.

I had 2 production twins RRD Wave twin, which I added sides to make it a quad and never went back. Other was a Quatro Wave Twin, which received rave reviews, I wont say any more.

Your preference on twins, That is your s

The Starboard quad IQ, was setup as a quad or twin and supplied with 6 fins to do this. Anyone who wants further answers can write Goya or Quatro for imput on suitability of twins on their quads.

Who is making twins now ?

I feel I represented K4 in a fair light in respect to the question.
They do have specs and recommended sizes, and fin use descriptions beyond anyone I have seen.

Do I have and use G10, yes. On my Rocket Tri fin I use G10s as the center, K4 have yet to make a suitable large weed fin

I forget which interview it was, but Marcilio Browne said that he rides his Goya custom quads as twins in cross onshore conditions. Not a Quatro board, but closely related.

All of my wave boards are either Goya or Quatro. I started trying my light wind board (Quatro Cube 110) as a twin while living on Oahu in 2015, and l liked it so much I changed all my boards to twins, even for cross off sailing. The benefits are earlier planing, easier to pump onto a wave, quicker turning on the wave. The disadvantages are not as controlled when sailing overpowered, and unless you upsize the fins (i.e. if quad set up is 16/10, should go to 17 twins), you lose the ability to truck upwind as easily. For me the benefits far outweigh the disadvantages as I live in a light wind area.

Out of curiosity, how much do you weigh? Also did you really only upsize the rears 1cm when going to a twin?

Thanks,
Grant

About 185 lb. Upsizing by about 1 cm to 1.5 cm is enough if you are coming from the MFC quad sets, as their quad front fins are much smaller than the front quad fins I've seen on some other brands. From memory I think the rear quad fins on the MFC 350 are 16 cm. I'm not aware of any brand other than K4 making twin fins bigger than 18 cm.

Maui Ultra Fin , 18.5.

The fins dont really need to be designated as twins, if you want longer or more area, and want to pay for them, lots of 20cm fins exist that would be suutable , that are single.

BPF 17.5 Makani 17 in twin sets.

Tarifa Fin Co, TFC will make what you want on any base.

To go twin over quad, for instance 15cm quad rears , 17cm would be hand grenade close, maybe 16.5. The determining factor would be increase in area.

So agree with captonian on size. But close to no interest to try it.

And again who is making a twin now ?
Starboard had the Evil twin one year, history has done away with them

For many years the Starboard Kode wave was a single fin / twin fin hybrid. It had 3 boxes but the two side boxes were positioned for twin fin use, not thrusters.

Simmer lists twin fins for their 2019 Quantum and Cortex.

Philip Koester still seems to like riding his quad as a twin fin while competing in the PWA:

I have the predecessor to that board in 95L and I weigh similar. I'd like to use it as a general B&J board and thinking perhaps a pair of K4 rockets set forward would work.
Then again I haven't spent any significant time on the board so perhaps it's fine as is.

A twin IMO is a board with 2 fin boxes. It can be sailed in one configuration , 2 fins a twin which are side by side..

The convertible boards with 3/4/5 boxes are not designed to be ridden as twins.
Can they be used as twins, yes obvious some can.
The last twin from memory was the 2012 ? Think thats correct Tabou Twister a freestyle board.

Kode 2016 was a twin or single, but couldn't be sailed as a thruster. Unsure about newer.
