Hello everyone!!! It has been wayyyyy too long since the last time Wyatt and I have posted on here. We decided that it is time to fire it back up again and get “Wyatt and Tyson’s Baja Report” up and running to keep all of you guys WHO ARE at home, in the cold, something to look forward to Wink

Here we go!

Where to start… We started our annual trip down THE BAJA to open up Pro-Windsurf La Ventana around October 1st, with our first pit stop being the legendary Punta San Carlos. On the way down, we had been watching the weather closely because of 2 hurricanes that were sticking around. As we were driving down through Oregon and California, the first one hit land, pretty much straight over San Carlos. They said it wasn’t that bad, but that it had dumped a bunch of rain in the region, which was going to make the road in an exciting one.

We spent the night in Ensenada and decided to give the road one more day to dry out. The following morning, after some much needed pastor tacos at the amazing Tacos Poblanos, we started the trek south, hoping to get into PSC with enough time to sail in the afternoon.

It looked like we were going to make it with plenty of daylight, until we turned off on the 40 mile dirt road that makes PSC such a wonderful place… HA… No more than 5 miles into the road, we ran into our first stop.

There was a Mexican family stopped on the road with a flat tire, but nothing to change it with. Between my truck, and the 2 sprinter vans heading in, we managed to pool together all the tools to get the tire changed. This wasn’t really the hard part… The driver then proceeded to let us know that he had a spare tire… A spare tire with no rim… We pieced together more tools so that he could get the popped tire off the rim, and get the new tire back onto the rim. The last test was how the hell are we going to fill the tire with air fast enough to get the bead to set?

The driver of the car started to search around to try and find a hose to siphon some gas out of his tank. I told him that I had 5 gallons in my truck for my moto, and he was more than welcome to use some of it. This is where I need someone to describe how this works, because we are all still perplexed… He put a little gas on the bead, lit it on fire, kicked the tire, and SNAP, the tire popped onto the bead! It was pretty crazy! They put the tire back on and were on their way.

Now that we realized we weren’t going to make it to sail, we slowed the pace down to give the vehicles a rest. At around 4PM, we ran into an RV going the opposite direction, telling us that the road is un-passable… We didn’t believe them, so we kept driving, and sure enough, there was a tractor working on the road, and they told us that it would be done by the morning.

We turned the caravan around, and drove about a mile back in the direction we came, to a nice flat spot to camp and dirt bike for the night.

After having a nice Cliff bar and beer dinner, we all passed out. The next morning, we were able to drive the rest of the way in to PSC.

That was the beginning of our 2 weeks of clinics at Solo Sports. We had 2 great weeks of waves, but the wind wasn’t as friendly. In the 2 weeks, we had about 4 days of wind, allowing everyone to have a blast in the good swell. The good thing was that a lot of people ended up surfing more than they have in the last decade or so!

All in all the 2 weeks in San Carlos were amazing, but it was time to pack it up and head down to our place in La Ventana!

The road from PSC to La Ventana was pretty good. The usual construction, along with livestock here and there, and a few potholes, kept us at the same pace that it always takes us to get there. When we arrived in La Ventana, we pulled in the driveway to see a full on construction blitz happening! The workers had just finished our two new apartments, and were hammering away to finish the other new 2-bedroom units that are going in as well. All it took was a few beer, and the workers were more than happy to help us move all the construction stuff out of the way so we could start loading the mountain of windsurfing gear that we had.

Next step was to design the new gear sheds. With all of the foil boards we now have, as well as a bunch of new sails, we figured the shed could use an upgrade. In-between sailing (because it has been windy almost every day that we have been here), and having to stop work because of the heat, we were able to piece together a whole new gear shed. It couldn’t have been done without the help of some great friends!

Now we are pretty much ready to roll! The wind machine is warming up, the fish are biting, the beer and tequila are flowing like the salmon of Capistrano… Now if Wyatt could just get his dirt bike started, everything would be back to normal!

SEE YOU ON THE WATER AND STAY TUNED FOR MORE UPDATES!

The Norte winds hit strong the last few days. Waves were breaking over the beach, flooding the gear sheds a bit, but totally worth is for the wind and waves.

I think this is day 5 straight of wind, first couple days people were out on foils in the morning and evenings and then regular gear in the middle of the day. The season is definitely ON!

Plus the fish are biting for sure, the Makani crew went out and hooked into 4 massive Yellowfin Tuna. The lost two of them in hour plus fights and managed to get two more into the boat.

Ahhhh Baja!

Wyatt,
The San Carlos story was great!
The reason the tire seats on the rim with gasoline is that the gas explodes (and very rapidly expands) inside the tire. The fire extinguishes quickly when the oxygen inside the tire is used up. It's now filled with carbon monoxide and other gasses. You don't need (or want) much gas. It is also done on jeep 4x4 trails in the wilderness. If not done right, it can be quite dangerous.

Well it has been windy, at least plenty windy for foiling every single day for the last two weeks. Plenty of good 4.8 freestyle days in there too. But the real story from down in La Ventana is our 10 year old protege Jualiancito's breakthrough to the big leagues! We met Jualiancito's dad when he was 14 and part of the La Paz Kids windsurfing club. He has been working for us the last few years and his son Juliancito has been absolutely tenacious about learning to windsurf. The kid gets throttled in the shore break and marches right back upwind with his gear, piece by piece and goes right back at it day after day.

Last year he got his water starts dialed, but was not really staying up wind. He had tons of help from all the guests down here who helped him drag his gear up wind over and over.

At the beginning of this season he was planing pretty good on the 120L board and a kits 3.5 sail. But this last week he used a 4.0 for the first time and we moved him down to the 87L and he really started to go faster. That extra speed lit him up and his dad kept telling us he wouldn't stop talking about it day and night. He was doing so good on the 87L that yesterday we switched him to a 70L board and he was totally ripping. He had no problem with the smaller board and it really increases his speed and allows him a lot more maneuverability. He is sooooo fired up it is great to see. I bet he will be jibing and jumping before too long!

Oh yeah and he is a heck of an artist. Check out his painting of the windsurf scene down here! Not sure if that is me crashing a backloop on the foil or if I have actually been decapitated...but either way its great work!

Wyatt and Tyson:

My wife and I had the most amazing week at your resort. Sailing the Norte winds with those rollers is awsome. Add 75 degree weather in December and both of you on the water and thats about as fun as it gets.

Non windy days were spectacular as well with great snorkling and paddling.

I didn't know you guys were such good cooks as your BBQ chicken wings were really tasty too!

Can't wait to return.
Mike
