To celebrate entering my old age I have been getting back into backpacking. What makes it comfortable is new technology (my overnights-ready backpack weights around 10 pounds, a fraction of what it used to be), and for safety I got a Garmin InReach Mini.
I do have a VHF radio but I am wandering if I should just forget about it and bring the Mini with me when windsurfing. It has the satellite SOS, it can text, but very probably there is some delay in respect to VHF. Advantage is that it is a locator, so they cannot but find you even in rough seas. (I always wondered how I would direct the Coast Guard in 3 miles offshore 30 knots wind conditions ...).
