Heat 1 for the men was held today and then they cancelled due to too much size.

Basically you could see the limit of paddle surfing right in front of you. One completed ride for the men, and the majority not able to make a bottom turn.

TV today was CBS Sports Network, or streaming at World Surf League.

Women went out first, 7am Hawaii time, and the bigger 20 second swell hadn't built in fully.

Women had two semis and one final, and luckily everybody lived, although one dislocated shoulder. In 3 heats one woman did one bottom turn, and Keala Kennely won due to most attempts. In retrospect they probably should have put the women off for a day.

Tons of atrocious wipeouts, but awesome water safety patrol. One jet ski on the rocks.

Grant Twiggy Baker held on to pull into the barrel of a 50 footer, and was catapulted upside down out of the end by the "spit", more like a water cannon.

You need speed to paddle in, so you need length and volume, and then on the face all that is a handicap. Nearly everybody is on quad fins. Supposedly Kai Lenny has next gen gear, but he is in the group that is held over til tomorrow. One woman on a single fin, and it was horrifying to watch her cavitate down the face and take a tremendous beating.

Dave Kalama and Peter Mel narrating. Definitely worth a watch.

After it was called on the first day, some of the usual suspects went windsurfing, nucking futs, but they are both wearing flotation.

Has anyone dropped in at Shipsterns or The Wedge yet on WS gear? Or Mavs?

From Jason:

It was truly massive today at Jaws. The WSL Jaws event was cancelled due to the immense size of the swell. I tried for 3 hours to catch a bomb set. This was my last wave, but there were some bigger ones out there. It’s been at least 10 to 12 years since I’ve been out at Jaws, at this size. Was so much fun, but scary as well. Wind was extremely light and offshore making it very difficult. Was glad to survive the day and at least get one good wave. Big thanks to Kevin Pritchard for running safety.

Wasn't there an article some time back, maybe in Windsurfer mag, about a windsurfing attempt at Mavericks by a notable guy, maybe Ian Boyd? I don't know if they hit a perfect day, but the gist of the article was that they were spooked and had no desire to go back.

I just looked at the Mavericks Surfline cam and there is a kiter out!

18ft/ 13 secs.
