|

up until now I have always been able to store boards, sails n stuff in semi-heated areas over the winter
now we may be looking at a change of house and NOT all have heated garages or easy access to a basement
most have sheds
so, can one store boards outside over the cold winter ??
we do get under -20 degrees C at times / -4 degrees F
guess vent screw open or out
what about HRS board with no vent screw ??
know Franco's WindSUP did NOT fare so well outside !! |

The SEARCH button will lead you to several LONG, detailed, thorough discussions of exactly this topic. I can't imagine anything new arising out of another thread on it. I suggest using keywords such as cold storage outdoors, for starters. |

Where I live in Iowa the record low is minus 34 degree fahrenheit which is about minus 36.7 degrees Celsius. The date was Januay 16, 2009. I had at least 4 windsurfing boards outside (under a tarp, on a trailer) at the time, just different boards from what is out there now. We've lived here 28 & 1/2 years; I've always had several longboards sitting outside on a trailer covered by only one thickness of tarp subject every winter to temperatures that go down at least as low as -20 F. I have not had any problems with such varied boards as: Bic 250, Bic 210, Bic Dufour Wing, Bic Veloce 328, Mistral Equipe XR, Starboard Start, F2 Comet, Fanatic MegaCat, & Kona One Design. I know of an Original Windsurfer which stayed outside in similar conditions which resulted in a skin so cracked the board became junk.
The key details are: 1. cover the board carefully enough water from snow or rain doesn't get in, 2. be as sure as you can be that the board doesn't already have water in it when you put it out for the winter. |

No damage from boards left in a unseated cabin in Maine, least 10 years on.
Several different type construction, newest a Starboard Formula .
Dry would be critical. _________________ K4 fins

Also - beware of field mice if you're using boardbags. They can wreak havoc on board bag padding and footstraps.

I"d do your best to keep the sails stored indoors away from the little critters I've lost more than one sail to mice and that was in a dry storage shed. |
