Any opinions for FCS Soft racks to carry one 100 liter windsurf board 15 miles each way to the beach on a passenger car? I was thinking cheaper, easier to take on and off and I would not hit my head on the ends of hard racks getting in and out of the car. |

If it ever lets go and injures any party or causes an accident, you are liable.
I'd go with a real rack and shorten the bars if I was banging into them. Unless mpg is a high priority, just leave it on the vehicle. Do you REALLY want to mount even a soft rack every frigging time you want to grab a spontaneous session? I even left my boards on my vehicle 24/7 to avoid loading every time (theft was not a risk.) An after-work session was far more valuable to me than mpg. |

I believe that I have FCS soft racks that I bought back in probably around 2000, but I lost the original bag that they came in. There is no brand name on the actual soft racks themselves.
Anyway, I used them for a week in Kauai in March 2000. The soft racks worked perfectly for me, but on more rural Kauai, I really didn't push the 50-55mph speed limit on their two lane roads. I used them with a single board on one side, with a gear bag on the other holding a couple masts, about three sails, and all the components and other necessary gear. The disassembled boom went in the trunk. I will say that I rented a 4 door car to maximize the distance between the racks.
Really though, the full load was only needed to get to and from the airport in Lihue going to Hanalei Bay. After that, I just threw the sails and masts in the interior of the car or trunk to make things easier and less susceptible to theft. |

Used one quite a bit. They make your windows leak if it rains and scratch your roof pretty quick. I prefer a simple rack without wide bars. |

So long as speed is not freeway, I envision no problem.
It poses about about as much danger as your hood flying open. _________________ K4 fins

Years ago we would take a tire and put it on top of a Ford Pinto. Then put my friends sunfish sailboat on top of the tire with no rope whatsoever and drive it 2 miles to the beach to store it for the year. Just throw it on top and drive slow. So anythings possible. |
