In the race that caused an earthquake in the Democratic Party, 28-year-old newcomer Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez upset longtime Rep. Joe Crowley, 57 percent to 42 percent.
But only about 13 percent of registered Democrats turned out to vote in the 14th Congressional District that takes in parts of Queens and the Bronx, according to a preliminary city Board of Elections tally.
There are 214,750 active registered Democratic voters in the district. Only 27,744 voted, and Ocasio-Cortez won by more than 4,000 votes.

"This incident we feel has been an embarrassment to our department. These officers acted in a manner which was unprofessional, alluding to a violent act to be conducted a sitting U.S. congresswoman," Lawson said.
He said an internal investigation had found that both men were in violation of the police department's social media policy, on which they had been trained. The department would consider further instruction on the issue for the rest of its employees, Lawson said.
The incident came just days after U.S. President Donald Trump touched off a furore by tweeting that Ocasio-Cortez and three of her colleagues in Congress, all women of colour, should "go back" where they came from if they were unhappy in the United States. |

Somebody tweeted the turnout to NW--I can't believe he figured this out on his own. Turnout for the primary was very low--but AOC beat the incumbent by getting 57% of the vote. She went on to get 110,318 votes--78.7% in the general election.
Part of AOC's appeal, and arrogance, is that she beat a mainstream Democrat pretty handily. It was an election when turnout was very high--led by huge increases in millenials. AOC's election was a bit of a unicorn--she was the only one that pulled off an upset of a more mainstream incumbent. Like Trump, she is a rookie and doesn't know much about the procedures that actually accomplish things. But she is pretty and out there, making her a media darling and a Trump target.
