Hi Gang,

It is looking like the I made forecast last week for strong NW Tuesday, April 9 is coming true!

One key to forecasting such wind in advance is to look for patterns of convergence and/or divergence of the winds way aloft.

The simple animation below shows you the sort of convergence happening way aloft today that is jazzing up our surface wind.

In the convergence zone, air molecules are being crammed into a smaller air so the air is denser and heavier so it moves towards the surface. This enhances the North Pacific High and indirectly the NW wind.

Now, look at the Divergence zone in the imagery. Who can figure out what that divergence will do to the low pressure in the Great Basin that is supporting our strong wind?
