Plan on doing more sailing this year but just have my Old gear 15+years .With my other interests I don't want to buy new gear. I plan on being in Mex. and maybe Maui and Capetown this and into next year and riding new gear . Any suggestions on riding my old stuff so as to better prepared for the new boards ? Using less back foot and more upright ? maybe shorter harness lines? I use 30" now . Thx.

Greetings Ms. Dog,

I still ride an old (probably 15 years at least) Hi-Tech IBM Gorge at times.
With newer sails, I tend to ride that board with the mast track all the way
back. You might try that as an intro into newer gear. Your thoughts about
new gear are exactly the way my stance went as the gear got shorter
and wider. I use less back foot pressure, I ride more upright, but long lines
are a good thing (right now) 30s might be premium for waves, I run 28s
myself.

Frankly, old gear was designed for a different style and trying to
ride old gear with a new gear stance is just going to put you out of balance.
New gear is different enough, that you should probably just try some rides
on some and see what you think.

Enjoy, and I hope your year is filled with warm winds and clear waters.

-Craig

To paraphrase Craig:
The character of the eras are different. If 15 yo is correct , it’s 2004,
It would really depend on the board, a JP X- Cite Ride or Starboard Carve ,we’re current designs then, and aren’t far from the newest.

If the new stuff you will be riding are wide Stubby shapes , then a lot different, I would expect those in Cape Town, along with sharks.

I wouldn’t fret , you will adapt to the newer, it’s more user friendly.

A great sailor from '04 using '04 gear is a great sailor today.
Why "change" your style?
Plenty of kooks wobble around today with new "style" setups.

I reckon, she has the olde stuff, or vintage at home USA.
When she, if that’s the case, goes to Maui Mex and or Cape Town, she will rent the stuff there, of course it will be newer.

Kooks .. wobble..Not everyone is a PWA candidate.

If you wobble around on 2000 stuff, you will wobble around on 2019 stuff.
If you wobble around on 2019 stuff, you will still wobble on 2000 stuff.
So, pilot is the main factor. Gear has almost NO bearing, unless you are a sub 37 year old expert freestyler...and except for Wyatt, Tyson, and Kevin, you would sail the same on either vintage style or gear.

No portion of this is reasonable thinking.
Including just the 3 names you mention, must not be anyone on the East coast who’s name you know.

Pertains only for those WHO POST on this forum.
Out of all the sailors who actually post here, and that might be in the thousands, only a handful actually need the new gear and style.
Those who say the new gear is a requirement who are not expert freestylers are just blowing smoke. What is needed to go back and forth, a little fast, a few jumps, and railing a few jibes.
Most of us say new gear is better because we sail better now than we sailed in 1999. In 1999 you had just begun to get decent at windsurfing!

Who said they have a requirement for current gear? Out of the thousands that post here, who said that ?

Are you implying NOBODY ever said new gear is better than old gear?
