Dlee might I ask what type of foil are you riding? I ask because I am also a beginner with about a month under my belt. Also I have added some smaller sails to my quiver a 3.4. And a 3.7 which allows me to foil everyday it's windy here at TI.

Naish 122 and Naish windfoil.
I prolly should be using about the same size sail as Kevin on his 76 wing. He's pushing 200 lbs., while I'm 160. But that never lines up.
Main problem is most days I'm powered up windsurfing on a 5.3 sized sail, and jumping is still fun considering it's at it's terminal point-end of days- for me.
Plus it's tough to be a kook again.
Haven't foiled more than once in the past 2 weeks.

Last 20 year's quiver ran from 4,0 to 7.5.
So now I gotta buy 2 more sails, a 340 mast, and a 135 boom?
What about my FOUR 85 liter boards? Or my 2 75 liter wave boards?

With those conditions I wouldn't bother foiling either. Unless it's exceptionally gusty or the water is dead flat and you don't like freestyle. If good old B&J conditions are available I don't see why you'd foil.

My reasons for getting a foil were for lite wind fun. Using a 4.7 when I couldn't windsurf on a 7.5 My low and high wind range has increased with time on the water. But if its that windy its time to windsurf...

2nd foil day in the past 2 weeks.
Went first in 12-22 on 5.3 and 90 freeride 4 runs, switch to foil when wind drops to 5-17. Can't foil in 5, no matter what direction or how I pump once up. Slogging, can barely balance
on 122 Naish.
Holy wind not good, need steady anything from 8-20.

Well I set a goal over the winter to give it a fair try. Then after a couple of weeks I have found that it rocks out in those conditions at TI.

Monday sailed on 3.8, 76 wing on the 105 wizard. The wind was on the top of the island so we sailed the windward side of island making runs all the way to the center tower on the bay bridge I was riding swell both directions craving it up jibing on the swell having fun.

Tuesday same set up butt it was windy all the way across to blunt point so after sailing around a bit I found the sweet spot was between buoy 4 and 6 as that is where the best swell rides where at.

I 'm now using the ezzy taka with the half batten which makes a huge difference as you can totally depower the sail and crave it up. For me it's all about having the right size sail (This is more important then in regular windsurfing) And sloging is a thing of the past tide is also not a problem.

With every session I'm more stoked with this foiling thing. It's all about CRAVING

Side note: My knees and back no longer hurt in the morning the next day.

To all the negative nannies out there It's what you make of it not what everybody things it should be.

Gwarn,

Are you able to foil back to the ramp without touching down?

Still, kinda hard to beat one of Sunday's run at Berk from the windline to around Ward St.. 3 little bunny hops out, one 4'er, planing swell jibe, 2 quick 3' junps and one 6, airtimer just before Lordships [well downwind, where I sail].
With 5.3 and 92 liter tri fin wave board. Made me almost feel young again.
Foiling makes me feel like an old person who's losing his ability to ride small gear. Last week I picked up a Naish 8'6" Freeride...84 liters and 54cm wide with a 32cm tail. After 7 jibes, sailing moderately powered, I was planing thru most of my inside jibes and jumping both directions. THAT makes me feel young again. I'm 70.
