I've been wondering about advice given by foiling instructors/pros regarding foil board crashes. Seems most of them say, "Don't let go of the booms." I take this to mean go with the catapult, hoping to get swung leeward of the nose of the board, as can happen on conventional boards. Thankfully, I've been riding conventional boards enough years that my launches are rare. But I'm still a relative newbie to foiling, and when I'm up and flying on a 90cm mast, Slingshot Dialer 145/Infinity76 wing, I do occasionally foil out and do a nose dive. Since I'm not usually hooked in, rather than hang on to the booms I bail out, jumping off sort of upwind. With the long mast, it usually happens in sort of a slow motion--enough time to bail. While this works for me, I'm wondering if there is some danger I'm not aware of. Why the "hang on" warning? Has anyone ever been run over by their own foil? Maybe it's more kook-like to bail vs get launched upside down??? Smile

I hang on to my WS booms, and expect to do the same with my foil setup, for at least four reasons:
1. I'm tired of sprinting for gear blowing away.
2. It makes most crashes much more gentle. It took me MANY launches to recognize how much that helps when sailing my strapless windSUP in nuking conditions on the same size sails I'd use for WSing.
3. I've lost my complete rig and board in extreme cases of #1, even in modest breezes on big gear.
4. Everybody, from Sloopy to Tony Logosz's Slingshot foiling academy video series, says, "Hang On".

90cm foil mast at the learning stage? That's contrary to all the advice I've seen.

I suspect that holding the boom slows the whack speed of the mast, thus possibly saving the nose of your board.
I'm a hack foiling, breach a handful of times most days, and survive 90% of them staying in the straps and hooked in.
Most days, I rig a 5.0 expecting 7-13 mph breezes..hoping against MN. Then gusts hit 23, whiles lulls remain in the 5 range.
I'm not good enough to foil in 5-23.

Today, 11-23, I stuck with windsurfing a 5.0 and Carve 90.
Fully wound up 60% of the time and foiling would have been..challenging.

Nice pic! I definitely hold on to the boom. I don't like the idea of throwing my gear and letting the board and rig get away from me. Also, I don't want to fall wrong and hit the foil and holding the boom gives me some comfort I'll stay away from the sharp 3 foot sword I'm riding.

I heard that foiling could make the sail feel light in the hands, but that is ridiculous!
