|
|
Went out today with larger front wing Infinity 84 with hopes to foil but shloogged instead in gusty 10-15mph, SB 147, Hotsails Speedrfreak 8.5, me @ 200 lbs. I should be fouling.
The first photo is position B per manual. Mast is further down the fuselage, positioning the front wing marginally more forward. Each position requires foil assembly from opposite ends of the fuselage.
Next is a photo of beginner mast position used by me today and closest to the front wing per Slingshot manual. I was told in this position lift is minimal, which is maybe why I had zero lift.
Is the extra inch or so down the fuselage is going to make the difference in creating more lift? I don't see a way to position the front wing even more forward.
Finally here's a screenshot of Monday wind conditions. The foil is now in position B; will this help me foil tomorrow?

We've had several looooong recent, even ongoing now, discussions about this. Look through recent thread titles about foils, Infinity, etc. and you'll find them easily. They're chock full of information, preferences, and, yes, contradictions. One is about three topics down in this forum, at

COE between your feet is the starting position.

10-15 and an 8.5 with the 84 Wing, you should be flying, even at 200lbs.
Foot placement is everything...well...almost.
Is your back foot directly over the mast? Are you weighting your back foot to gain lift off?
Foot in the front foot strap and go downwind during the gusts while you weight your back foot for lift off.
Try pumping as well, but with 15 gust on 8.5, you should just be able to go downwind to pick up speed.

First picture is "C", second is "B"
For the 84 apparently you want "C".

Mix and match does not always work well in foiling, since boards and foils are very different. The Starboard foils seem to have the mast in the center of the fuselage. That would put the front wind much further forward than the Slingshot in the C position (your first picture). You'd have to stand a few inches behind both footstraps with the Infinity 84 to fly, but that's not possible.
You could try to move the mast all the way to the back in the track. That may help a bit, but may not be enough. You could also try a smaller sail to reduce pressure on the mast foot. With the i84, I can foil in 13 mph, gusting to 15, on a 6.5 using a 71 cm wide 117 l board. I'm about the same weight as you, and just past the beginner stage in foiling. I think you will also need the straps all the way back, and most of your weight on the back foot, to have a chance to foil.
All this is more to see if you can get the foil out at all with the board. In the long run, you'd probably have to add a thread or two to move the mast more towards the center of the fuselage. If you do that, keep in mind that the aluminum is anodized to reduce corrosion; I'm not sure if that also applies to the threads. The better thing to do would be to use stainless steel inserts, anyway, like many other manufacturers do. That definitely reduces corrosion issues.

I ride the Infinity 84 with the wings in the forward position which is in your first photo that you posted and it works well for me. I also ride the original 68 wing in the same position so no changing the fuselage for me. Wyatt also recommends this C position for the 84. Apparently it is designed to be used in that position.

84 works best in the c position, has to do with how the wing mounts..My foiling friend was riding pretty good on the 76 wing in B.. Decide to get the 84 and couldn't get it to fly as early or fly level. Put it in C and he is as happy as can bet...
