Welded Carbon Wavesail

Years ago, probably in the early 90s, there briefly was a US sail brand that was making similar welded sails which I believe used sandwiched kevlar inside instead of carbon. A local guy, Bob Krauss (BK), had one for a while. I can't remember whether he damaged the sail or it started come apart, but to address the problem he had to sent it back to factory to get it repaired or replaced.

I believe you are talking about Oceanic sails. Supposedly still some around and very light.

I think that you were right about the name, Oceanic.

Overall though, one wonders whether Severne with their new sail design and construction process has planned to handle the repair side of things worldwide. If the sails are manufactured in China or some other Asian country, the repair side of the picture could be a difficult problem for the average sailor. But who knows, maybe repairs could fall back on more traditional sail repair techniques.

According to some the repair will be easy peasy, with the all conquering tape, they may have to upgrade from the dollar store variety to Wally World

Airex Sails that used to be located here in Corpus Christi tried the welded sail concept back in the very early 90's. As I remember it, UV from the sun quickly cause the welding adhesive to fail. Similarly once a panel was damaged, it was very difficult to get the seams clean enough for the weld to bond to the old seam. The weld worked on new materials, but not so much on older materials.
