|
|
Hey foilers, anyone have a Slingshot fuselage break? I was sailing at Arlington in about 20 mph wind on a 5.6 sail and the Slingshot Infinity 76 front wing. I weigh 200 lbs. The break was at the fuselage to mast bolt.
The wing was scratched on the top side.
Any thoughts.

I snapped mine in half at the mast bolt hole. I hit a submerged log pretty hard.

New to wind foil. The fuselage seems pretty heavy duty ("weighty" at least). Assuming you didn't hit anything, maybe the screws were not tight or loosened causing some movement leading to a break. It would seem like it would take a lot (or a defect) to cause a break. Slingshot does suggest Teflon tape. I used it at first but it comes off so didn't continue...

I’m 200 lbs also.
I upgraded to a GW101 with the 683 wing. Word of warning, the GW stays in the truck and I ride the mangled Infinity 76. It’s much harder to foil a jibe on the 683 at our size. Also, you can’t bolt the Moses 790 (Infinity 76 equivalent) on the GW101 fuse and have to buy the 900. $$$.

Thanks for the replies.
I loaded some pictures.
It is just weird the the scratches are on the top of the wing. I would think if I hit something there would be damage on the front or bottom. Bolts are tight. Anyway, I got replacements so I’ll get back on the water soon.

The fuselage is not a very good grade of aluminum alloy.

I had a chance to look at your fuselage at Arlington. When I first saw it I was scratching my head. It occurred to me it could have been an underwater cable that you caught the front wing on. This would explain the large scrape and broken fuselage. From where you told me you were foiling it made sense that there might be a mooring cable submerged to the east of the port water access. Just a thought.

I don't think you hit anything. Given that there is so little aluminum left where the bolt hole is and the high stress at same point, a failure from repeated stress is quite possible. Over time stress cracks may have slowly developed. When the weakened aluminum finally failed the wing came up and hit the mast, making the mark on the top of the wing. This would feel like hitting something submerged. Take a close look at the mast and see if there is a corresponding mark on the leading edge.

I just experienced exactly the same fuselage failure!

I didn't hit anything and it snapped right at the front bolt connecting the fuselage to the mast. Some local experts informed me that this is metal fatigue and that this is a design flaw. That part of the fuselage needs to be reinforced to prevent this kind of failure.
Update: Slingshot was really great about getting me warranty replacement parts for this! I continue to be a happy Slingshot customer

Mine broke in the same spot.
How did you manage to get the parts back to the beach?
