Even the lefties should be able to answer this question, as it has been discussed in the WAPO and other left wing sources: Who is the greatest buyer of baby formula? i.e., who's driving its devastating shortage? Walmart? Right Aide? Hoarding moms?

Guess again. The U.S. government.

Why ... for whom?

Illegal aliens at our southern border. Film at 11. And 12. And 1. And 2. And 3 ... ad nauseum. Stacks and stacks of pallets of formula, while U.S. citizens can't buy it and are being told to just feed their hungry babies less.

Sez who? The U.S. government.

If that's news to you, you can't claim to be informed. In fact, you're a hermit, as it has dominated the news for months.

We can get Tucker Carlson talking points without having to look at his smarmy face. Repeated with no thought involved.

I have consistently described deficit spending as something that fuels inflation. There is no sounder risk than loaning to the US government. I also have consistently said that it makes sense at times like the 2008 collapse when the deflationary trend is severe, not just an adjustment.

The current surge in inflation is related to many more factors. And the usual suspects ignored the Trump tax cuts, the even greater collapse in crypto currency, and so forth. But we can get Carlson's take from Isobars, and the WSJ take from the quisling--all with no additional thought added.

Three factors are driving the U.S. baby-formula shortage: bacteria, a virus, and a trade policy.

First, the bacteria. After the recent deaths of at least two infants from a rare infection, the Food and Drug Administration investigated Abbott, a major producer of infant formula, and discovered traces of the pathogen Cronobacter sakazakii in a Michigan plant. As a result, the FDA recalled several brands of formula, and parents were advised to not buy or use some formula tied to the plant.

That brings us to the second cause: the virus. The pandemic has snarled all sorts of supply chains, but I can’t think of a market it’s yanked around more than infant formula. “During the spring of 2020, formula sales rocketed upwards as people stockpiled formula just like they stockpiled toilet paper,” Lyman Stone, the director of research at the consulting firm Demographic Intelligence, told me. Then, as “families worked through their stockpiles, sales fell a lot. This oscillation made planning for production extremely difficult. It was complicated to get an idea of the actual market size.” Meanwhile, Stone’s research has found that an uptick in births in early 2022 has corresponded with a “very dramatic decline in rates of breastfeeding” among new mothers, which pushed up demand for formula once again.

Finally, the third factor: America’s regulatory and trade policy. And while that might not sound as interesting to most people as bacteria and viruses, it might be the most important part of the story.

FDA regulation of formula is so stringent that most of the stuff that comes out of Europe is illegal to buy here due to technicalities like labeling requirements.

U.S. policy also restricts the importation of formula that does meet FDA requirements. At high volumes, the tax on formula imports can exceed 17 percent. And under President Donald Trump, the U.S. entered into a new North American trade agreement that actively discourages formula imports from our largest trading partner, Canada.

America’s formula policy warps the industry in one more way. The Department of Agriculture has a special group called WIC—short for Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children—that provides a variety of services to pregnant and breastfeeding women and their young children. It is also the largest purchaser of infant formula in the United States, awarding contracts to a small number of approved formula companies.

Debate surrounds the provision of Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) benefits to undocumented immigrants. Few studies are available to estimate use of WIC services by documented and undocumented households using nationally representative data. The authors analyzed data from the National Agricultural Workers Survey (NAWS) annual cross-sections from 1993 through 2009 (N = 40,896 person-years). Household documentation status is defined by the status of the adults in the household, not children. Simple mean differences, logistic regressions, and time charts described household participation in WIC over 2-year intervals. Without adjustments for covariates, 10.7% of undocumented farm workers' households and 12.4% of documented households received WIC benefits, yielding an odds ratio of 0.84 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.76-0.94). Logistic regressions revealed that for the same number of children in the household, participation by undocumented persons was higher than participation by documented persons. Time charts and logistic regressions with interaction terms showed a stronger correspondence between participation in WIC and number of children <6 years old in undocumented households than documented households. Undocumented farm workers' households were only a little less likely to participate in WIC than documented farm workers' households, and undocumented households' participation was especially responsive to the presence of children. These results are consistent with the legal requirements for WIC participation, which do not distinguish between documented and undocumented households. These results may be helpful in the debate surrounding the effects of undocumented workers on WIC participation and costs.

Leave it to Iso to blame a shortage of baby formula on migrants at the border. He never seems to miss an opportunity to blame something on migrants at our southern border, usually with few facts to back up his posts.

While migrants at the border will include some infants who use formula, their consumption of formula is a small fraction of the overall US use of formula.

"In 2020, there were approximately 3.6 million babies born in the United States, about 75% of whom were fed infant formula at some point before age 1. Comparatively speaking, there were close to 150,000 unaccompanied minors in detention at some point during 2021, the vast majority of whom (75%) were over the age of 15. While we don’t know the precise number of infants who passed through custody, we can say that the number is in likely in the hundreds, not millions."

In addition, there are multiple other factors involved in the shortage, as other sane people on this forum have pointed out.

I guess Iso would rather see these babies starve. This would certainly please people like the Buffalo shooter who believe in the “replacement theory,” the notion that white Americans are at risk of being replaced by people of color.
