For someone new to the area, whats the best spot to go to sail near Chicago? Also, when does the season start? Is the water still freezing? |

Montrose Harbor. Take the Wilson Exit off of Lake Shore Drive. You can park 100 ft from the water, rig in the grass and launch in the sand. The water is fine with a drysuit, I was in April 9th. |

The launch sites in Chicago (once the swimming beaches are open) include Montrose beach, Greenwood Beach in Evanston, Wilmette Beach in Wilmette, Wolf Lake in Northwest Indiana, Silver Lake, Delevan Lake, Lake Andrea and Lake Geneva in southeast Wisconsin. Before swimming season, there are many beaches to launch from, including 12th Street beach at Meigs Field. Also, Northwestern University offers lessons and use of their private sailing club if you become a member.
Evanston Windsurfing Association is the only local association. There is a swap meet for purchase & sale of used gear scheduled for Sunday, May 7th in the park just north of Greenwood Beach.
Ive been sailing several times so far this year and hope to go again this weekend . . . ?? |

Montrose is good, Evanston is good - except for the daily sailing fee (used to be $15). Meigs field/planetarium is good on North. Wolf Lake toxic lake, speed sailing is good if its blowing 25 plus in the spring and fall when the Lake Michigan has had waves building for a few days. If the lake gets too big due to waves being so close together or is just a bad direction...or if you freeze in your drysuit, then go to Wolf Lake. You can only handle so much flat water sailing.
On North and Northwest, go around the lake for fantastic wave sailing. Miller Beach in Indiana is 45-75 minutes from downtown depending on traffic. Silver Beach in St. Joseph, MI has a loyal following where waves line up around the Lighthouse.
Up in Waukegan / Zion, Illinois beach state park near Outboard Marine Company is also fun.
The season runs from April to late May and the end of August to November. Get a Drysuit!!!!!
