Just a beginner here, but wanted to find any convenient options for surfing the wind. I am aware of Peace Valley Park and Nocomixon in Bucks county, PA. Of course the Jersey shore Bays. Anyone else find anything worthwhile around.

For a beginner, theres also Spruce Run and Round Valley reservoirs in nortwestern NJ. When your waterstarts get good you can sail the Delaware river at a few different spots. But if youre really serious about sailing, I recommend just getting yourself to the Jersey shore in time for the afternoon thermals. Lakes Bay, though in some ways the least-attractive (mucky-stinky bottom, far from real beach, etc.) does have a tendency for the best wind as well as a good community of wsfers, a shop, and instructors right at the lauch area.

Concur with the other response. I spent a year on Spruce run (clinton, NJ). Great to learn uphauls, but wind is quite variable and can be frustrating and difficult unless you like doing the hula. I learned more at Seaside Park NJ in one week than I ever learned in spruce run. The seaside park launch is on Barnegat Bay just before you get to the state park. Water is frequently waist deep and not too chopy. There is a small cove to work on waterstarts (which are strongly recommended on thermal days when the winds exceed 20). Good luck and have fun... |
