Cabrillo Beach, San Pedro, CA, (a.k.a. Hurricane Gulch) is the most popular windsurfing spot in Los Angeles Country. Heal-the-Bays water quality monitoring on both the ocean and bay sides of San Pedro far too often comes back with an F grade, even in dry weather. Recently, Heal-the-Bay has been highlighting the problems at Cabrillo Beach. If you sail there, for the safety of your health, praise them for their work and help push for polution elimination. Heal the Bays efforts to clean up the harbor side of Cabrillo Beach(versus the ocean side) definitely should be supported.
But, to clear up a little confusion here, if you go to the beach report card for Cabrillo Beach at www.healthebay.org, you will find that 90% of the time the outside beach gets As or A+s, sometimes even in wet weather. As I understand it, the reason why the outside beach consistently gets good ratings is the upwell that occurs just slightly off the coast.
