Can anybody point me in the right direction for information on the Canneries.
Is it best to hire kit there or take your own, cheap accom, car hire, where to sail. etc. I am planning on going in June/ July.

Hi,
go to Vargas, which is not very crowded. In June/July you probably will need just a 3.7 or 4.2 sail. Rental cars are really cheap. If you need an appartment, get back to my message.

Alby,
If you like rocks, crowds and nuclear winds (3.0-4.0) you will be served ! Only 2 spots in Gran Canaria: Pozo and Vargas. Both work with a low tide filling in, and you have waves... the wind is thermal and gusty with huge nuclear gusts when 40+....
I went last year thinking I was heading to paradise, but turns out with the world cup and too much wind, we had no place to sail ! the locals are very aggressive and dangerous... Nightlife was poor so was tourism... I recommend morocco, like Essouiria, just as windy, better waves, sand and friendly locals ! by the way airfare from the states is $$$$ and the risk for lost baggage in Madrid is high ! They lost mine on the way in and took 4 months to get money out of Spanair ! Fly Iberia...
here are some websites:
best for rentals, local homes, very nice, stayed in Aguimes
http://www.canary-islands.com/uk/agu-plano.html
local surf shops, nice guys whom have a monopoly... bring your gear and spares... masts, fins, booms, harness, as the rocks and gusts have a tendency to damage a lot... |

Pozo is the well known location in Gran Canaria however for some less rocky lauches Teneriffe and Fuerventerra have some fantastic sailing sites. If you want nightlife there is loads of it, stay in one of the resort locations (los Americas G.C for example) and drive to the beaches, the islands are small. The wind certainly nukes the Canaries all summer long youcouldnt select a better time, take your own equipment, rental locations are limited and pricey. Have fun the Canaries are awesome!!!!!! |
