1. What is Wireless Web Membership?

Our Wireless Web Membership allows you to access real-time wind info and forecasts via our wireless web site using your web-enabled cellphone (or PDA, such as a Palm Pilot). Wireless Web membership also includes access to our regular internet website.

To learn about Wireless Web, read these 3 pages:
1) Wireless Web Basics
2) Test & Tips: Test your phone for compatibility
3) FAQ: Wireless Web Frequently Asked Questions (the current page you are reading)

2. What are the advantages of Wireless Web access?

Wireless Web is the best way to get your wind info!

1 -- With Wireless Web, you can get real-time wind and forecast information on your cellphone or PDA at any time, from anywhere with cellphone reception.
2 -- In many areas, cellular phone coverage is better than pager reception, so for current Wind Pager members, Wireless Web can even be used as a backup to the Wind Pager.
3 -- You can customize your Wireless Web with only the wind sensor sites and forecasts that you want. Then, when you access your "myWind" page with your cellphone, you go instantly to the info you want!
4 -- With Wireless Web Membership, you get wireless wind data anywhere in North America (as long as your cellphone has a national calling plan).

Configure your Wireless Web today, click here!

3. How do I upgrade from FX to Wireless Web Membership?

When you upgrade from FX to Wireless Web membership, the remaining time on your FX membership will be prorated as credit toward your Wireless Web membership.

To upgrade, simply log in with your FX username and password (they will not change after you upgrade), click on the Membership Tab, then click on WIRELESS WEB MEMBERSHIP. Once you complete your new order for Wireless Web membership, we will prorate the remaining time on your FX membership as credit on your member account, and then we will start your new Wireless Web membership.

4. Will Wireless Web work with my Cellphone?*

YES! or, most providers have free / cheap cellphones that you can switch to that will work.

1. If you already have a "wireless-ready" or "wap-capable" cellphone or PDA, all you need is your regular iW / iK Username and Password to see if your phone is ready to roll. To try your cellphone and for more Phone Tips, click here.

2. If you do not have a "wireless-ready" or "mobile web" phone yet, the best way to find out if a particular phone from a particular provider (such as Sprint, AT&T, Cingular, Verizon, etc.) will work with our Wireless Web site is to take your iW / iK Username and Password down to your local retailer, and tell them you need a phone and a plan that will allow you to reach http://wap.iWindsurf.com. When ready to try a cellphone to see if it's ready to reach our site, click here: click here.

Important Note:
Different Pricing Structures:
Some cellphone companies offer wireless / mobile web pricing based on amount of data transferred per month. Some offer pricing based on minutes used. Still others offer pricing based on unlimited usage for a set fee. We suggest calling a few companies and seeing what works best for you. Regarding pricing based on amount of data transferred: it varies widely depending on whether you get the graphs or not, which pages you load most, and even how windy it is! A conservative average is about 2k per page with graphics, 1k without.

We've tested the Cingular service and estimate that most users can probably get away with the 1 MB / month data plan. For the most extreme heavy users, the 4 MB / month plan should be more than enough.

3. Which Cellphone Provider should I choose?
You do need to research the options using the above info but most importantly by speaking with the various providers. Specifically, be sure to ask the providers whether your mobile web / wireless web phone and plan will definitely work well in the areas **where you will using your cellphone to check our wireless web site for wind data**. In most cases, this should be no problem.

4. Cellphone Provider Coverage & Compatibility Known Issues
(updated Fall 2005):

I. VERIZON
A. Gorge
Some customers report that Verizon phones work sometimes but will often switch to Analog mode when in the rural areas around the main access spots in the Gorge. Once in analog mode, Verizon Mobile Web has been reported to not be available -- thus Wireless Web may not work reliably. Other customers have reported that Verizon does not work at all in the Gorge.
B. Oregon Coast
No widespread problems reported.
C. Systemwide
In order to view the graphical elements of our wireless web service, your phone must support Verizon's ""Mobile Web 2.0". Be sure you ask for that when purchasing a Verizon phone.

II. CINGULAR/AT&T
A. Gorge
No widespread problems reported.
B. Oregon Coast
No widespread problems reported.

III. SPRINT/NEXTEL
A. Gorge
No widespread problems reported.
B. Oregon Coast
Spotty Wireless Web service reported.
C. Systemwide
Sprint users with the Handspring Treo 600 phone: if you are having trouble with cookies on your phone, click here for a fix.
If that fails to install or to fix the issue, you might try this: Perform a "hard reset" of your phone to completely wipe out all installation files, info, settings, etc. Then uninstall everything Treo600-related from your PC. Then re-install everything onto your PC and phone, and make sure you are connected to the Internet (so it can get whatever "latest updates" it needs). NOTE: Make sure you back up any data before performing this measure.

V. US CELLULAR
A. Gorge
No widespread problems reported.
B. Oregon Coast
No widespread problems reported.

VI. T-MOBILE
A. Gorge
No widespread problems reported.
B. Oregon Coast
No widespread problems reported.

5. Hardware/Software Known Issues/Workarounds
(updated Spring 2007):

I. PalmOS
A. Our wireless web site is known to work with the Handspring Blazer and PalmOne WebPro browsers, among others. On WebPro, make sure to uncheck the "use proxy server" setting.

5. What level of membership do I need to get Wireless Web access?

Anyone with a wireless web enabled cellphone can log in to our wireless web site. But, only Wireless Web Members or Wind Pager Members can access the real-time wind speed numbers and forecasts. Click on the Membership tab for more Membership info.
