Local sailor Mike Pesco has provided us w/ this report for Crescent City:

The main ocean sailing area of Point St. George typically sees a 10-20 knot day. However, it can go to 40 knots by late afternoon. The launch, which is right off of Pebble Beach Drive has lots of parking and no crowds. (There are less than 5 sailboarders in the area and most sail the Gorge or sail Maui in the winter.) Beware that at the end of the inside sailing area is the entrance to the mighty Pacific. If you venture past the rocks you are on your own. If you break down outside you are smack in the middle of the Humboldt Current and you are gone and no one will see you go! The rocks are filled w/ sea lions and guess who patrols the channel? This is an advanced area, can be quite good but is a little radical at times. The prevailing wind is North and blows side offshore. The harbor and beaches in town don't get the wind so this is the spot in the spring and summer.
