saturday...
a gale warning remains in effect from 1 am to 9 pm pst saturday.
a small craft advisory for winds remains in effect until 1 am pst
saturday. a small craft advisory for hazardous seas remains in
effect until 1 am pst saturday.
* seas: combined seas 12 to 14 ft early this afternoon...will
increase rapidly late this afternoon to near 20 to 22 ft with a
dominant period near 18 seconds. while seas may temporarily
relax into the 17 to 20 ft range late tonight...increasing south
winds will push seas back up towards 20 ft through midday saturday.
* winds: south to southwest 20 to 25 kt today...rising to 30 t0 35
kt with gusts of 40 to 45 kt after midnight. there is a chance
50 kt winds will develop within 20 nm of the coast as a brief
coastal jet develops and enhances wind speeds. winds will likely
relax considerably around midday saturday. however...gusts to 35
kt may linger into saturday evening...but uncertainty in whether
or not these lingering gusts will occur is low.
precautionary/preparedness actions...
a gale warning means winds of 34 to 47 knots are imminent or
occurring. operating a vessel in gale conditions requires
experience and properly equipped vessels. it is highly
recommended that mariners without the proper experience seek safe
harbor prior to the onset of gale conditions.
a small craft advisory for wind means that wind speeds of 21 to
33 knots are expected. inexperienced mariners...especially those
operating smaller vessels should avoid navigating in these
conditions.
a small craft advisory for hazardous seas means that waves are
expected to be hazardous to small craft. mariners should avoid
shoaling areas. long period swell can sharpen into large breaking
waves in shoaling areas. it is not unusual for waves to break
much farther from shoaling areas than is normally experienced.
remember...breaking waves can easily capsize even larger vessels.
