...ice storm warning now in effect until 9 am pst wednesday below
2500 feet for the north oregon and south washington cascades and
the western columbia river gorge...
* timing...freezing rain and sleet will develop later this
afternoon and early this evening...and continue through early
* timing of heaviest precipitation...from 8 pm tonight through 3 am
* ice accumulation...ice accumulations of 1/4 to 1/2 inch are possible
through wednesday morning.
* washington areas affected...the western columbia gorge...and elevations
below 2500 feet...deep in the cascades. this would include only
those areas in skamania county...which includes trapper creek
wilderness...white salmon valley and trout lake and even the
upper reaches of the lewis river. highways to be affected
include highway 14...washington route 141 and the wind river
* oregon areas affected...the columbia gorge...and elevations
below 2500 feet in eastern multnomah and northeastern clackamas
county. this includes interstate 85...highway 26 and 30.
* impacts...travel through the lower elevations in the
cascades...as well as the western columbia gorge will become
very treacherous or impossible. ice can lead to danger from
falling limbs or trees...as well as possibly downed power lines.
* actions to take...ensure you have batteries and flashlights...avoid
unnecessary travel. setting your thermostat up a few degrees
today and tonight may help keep your house warm longer during
any power outage.
an ice storm warning means severe winter weather conditions
are expected or occurring. significant amounts of ice
accumulations will make travel dangerous or impossible. travel is
strongly discouraged.commerce will likely be severely impacted. if
you must travel...keep an extra flashlight...food...and water in
your vehicle in case of an emergency. ice accumulations and winds
will likely lead to snapped power lines and falling tree branches
that add to the danger.
