So Windfind you are saying NW favors this site??

HI Combs,

No. The best wind for 3-Mile is SW to WSW. But if the wind just aloft near 3-Mile is more W or WNW the surface wind is not messed up like it is at The Wall.

The topography of the walls or ridges of the Gorge tends to steer the surface winds the direction the each portion of the Gorge lines up. However increasingly the 975 mb. winds at around 1000 ft. up are more W to WNW. This really messes up the WSW winds at the surface of the river at The Wall: https://blog.weatherflow.com/west-coast-wind-blog-the-wall-wind-direction-and-2-venturis/

This WNW flow aloft also makes the Hatch very up and down.

3-Mile is much more protected from these WNW winds aloft. So if the 3-mile forecast is for SW-WSW and you see a bunch of warnings about The Wall being up and down and Arlington being stronger than Roos don't worry... 3-Mile will probably still be good.

Mike,
Why does the wind sometimes shift to W at 3mile after blowing SW or WSW all day? It only occurs late in the day, rarely before ~4pm. Does it happen when the Canadian low shifts south, or when The Dalles to Pasco gradient drops, etc. Attached is the pressure setup for last Thursday when it was blowing strong all day and started to shift west at 2pm but didn't hold W until after 4pm. The Dalles to Pasco gradient peaked at 2pm.
Thx,
Chris

Hi Chris,

Matt Sounders and I are working on understanding that wind shift since it is responsible for blown forecastn. So far Matt says:

Matt Souders 10:08 AM
so if flow is WSW and then turns W-WNW, they'll feel that pretty immediately.
New
10:08
I can say this much...even when Rufus is WNW, way out to Loroc, it's usually WSW until late unless there's a trough caused by jet dynamics
10:09
the axis of the thermal/terrain low is usually between The Wall and Arlington
10:10
But, I think that right around the high time of the day, west winds through the Gorge start to hit peak from Rufus to Arlington and that deforms the heat low and pushes the axis east.
10:11
(because you're feeding cooler air into it from the west)

I might add that "bad" at 3-mile is a bit relative. We are not talking Rufus bad. Rather, "bad" there is actually pretty good comparatively.
