Anyone have any ideas how to modify an old board for use as a beginner board? I have an old 10 ft long - 68cm wide f2 comet slalom with centerboard. Was wondering if there is any way to add width and stability. Training wheels if you will. Proper beginner boards like fanatic viper are hard to find and very expensive new.

Lots of folks learned on that board. Plenty of glide in lite wind and a center board to get up wind.

Yes, I did, my brothers did, but we are tiny compared to my 6-2, 220lb nephews. 68 is pretty narrow for modern heavyweight beginners. I’d prefer 85-90cm.

PVC outriggers? Look at kayak solutions perhaps?

Just keep your eyes out for an early 2000s Start in crappy shape. So long as it's mostly waterproof should be fine.

I think you're wise to realize that more width and volume in the beginner board would make it much easier for your hulking nephews learn the sport.

However, I think it will be so difficult to add width and volume to the board that the engineering project will not be worth it. The one thing that I have occasionally seen built to turn old longboards into suitable beginner boards is a "boardamaran" with two narrow longboards bound together with a big plywood standing platform, but you would need two boards for that, and it would be awful to store and transport.

If you can't find an affordable, wide beginner board on the market, an effective poor-mans beginner board can be made by adding a mast track and center fin to the largest used standup paddleboard you can find. Some old 12' x 80 cm beast with 200+ liters volume would be ideal. You need a router and some fiberglass and epoxy to put the box and track in, but it's a simple surgery compared to changing the width or volume of a board.

Inflatable SUP with the center fin and mast base screw can be pretty inexpensive as a starter kit. The boards tend to be about 80cm wide and are super stable. My daughter just uses it as SUP. Its been well worth it simply as SUP. After your heavy learner gets comfortable on wide beginner board, they can switch back to your old learner board and progress.

Wow! Better than pool noodles and duct tape! And the light grey coloring does not stand out like the embarrassingly bright neon colors of pool noodles. Plus, at $17.22, it is less expensive. Interesting find.
