A nice tack is a nice tack.
State of the art...circa 1980. Craig Yester, on a similar volume board.

Nice. I can’t do that. Something to look forward to trying in the spring.

Video almost made it look like the board was slipping without a fin.

Immaculate timing! Per ABK I usually go around the mast about an "hour" earlier and backwind for stability.

In any event, nice vid. Tacking is the great underrated skill!

I agree. it also uses far less energy is faster, and you don't lose ground.

Funny.
I probably attempted less than 10 tacks from 1989 to 2012.
Never got stuck downwind.
Even sailing from Paia to Hookipa, long planing jibes.
Sailed in the surf 400+ days and never found reason to tack.

It's not about getting stuck downwind, it's about getting upwind faster. Why give up 40 -70 feet of upwind gains every time you transition? If one is in a narrow channel or trying to get off a tight beach, it's a useful and valuable skill. If winds are light and I'm barely planing anyway, why not use a few tacks to gain some upwind ground so I can burn it staying on a plane in a lull?

You may frequent someplace it's not "required" but some people need to (onshore wind) and some people want to.

Ricardo Campello tacking in the middle of a wave heat at Pozo: https://youtu.be/nO5W7HWrxxg?t=38 At 5:27, his opponent is tacking in the background.

Yet pro windsurfers tack regularly. They seem to have found ample reasons for wanting to reverse course without going an inch downwind. They tack because they can. For us amateurs tacking is part of the intermediate and up skill set, the smaller boards being increasingly challenging.

When you tack, you come OFF a plane.
When you jibe, you can exit on a plane.
