Snow sailing can be started with a minimal investment: buy used wake boards or used snow boards. Hardware store angle iron about 6 to 12 inches long can be bolted on both sides of the rear 1/3 of the board to act somewhat like a fin. Plywood can be added to the top to reinforce the board for attaching a mast base. Bolt or screw from the bottom of the "board" to attach the plywood. Then screw down through the base plate of a two bolt base to attach the base to the plywood. That is how I re-inforced a toboggan in Dec '94 or Jan '95 to start my snow sailing. Since then I also bought used 4 sleds for sailing, one with just blades for ice, 2 with just skis for snow & 1 with a set of skis for snow & a set of blades for ice. Last year I bought two wake boards which I haven't sailed yet: but I did get a chance to try them on downhill sledding & they worked quite well so I know they will work for snow sailing after I add a mast base. If the board is thin enough a single bolt base will also work (or if the single bolt can be exchanged for a bolt long enough to go through the wake board or snow board. Based on the local area Facebook Marketplace it appears older wake boards that are somewhat longer & directional in shape are cheaper than the newer boards that are less directional in shape. Hard packed snow is the best surface. New snow has too much softness to be sailable.

In my experience the only snow that can be sailed is hard or packed snow. (I don't have any experience with really dry snow.) The snow in the video Joe posted is hard or packed snow.

When the snow is hard or packed the depth doesn't matter unless it isn't deep enough to cover something that would inhibit sailing.

THAT is why I am trying to use an elevated platform
powder snow just does not work for windsurfing
however, some fellows have windsurfed down a mountain
here is a sample Smile

Tried snowfer but needs certain conditions so prefer to use a mountain board over dry areas instead.
